EDIT: Guess Jeremy's example the ink is covered in the rental fee. I misread his comment, but I'll leave my coment up incase anyone runs into a printer rental that DOESN'T cover the cost of ink.
A huge problem I see with renting Printers is that I would imagine they'd require that you use only brand name ink cartages.
I own a Brother Laser Printer and Inkjet Printer. A single Brother brand black laser ink cartage costs $40-$50. I can buy FOUR high-yeild off brand cartages for that same price and I've only ever had one not work.
For my inkject, a single set of Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow cartages cost about $40. I recently bought a off-brand box set of 4 of each (again high yield) for HALF that much. That's 4x as many, with more ink in each, for half the price.
That alone would not make renting a printer worth it to me...

When you think of the rental fee, don't forget that your repairs, and waiting time while your printer is being repaired is COVERED. Toner and spare parts -- covered. It is a convenience to rent, but not necessarily a money saver.

I bought a high quality HP Laserjet Dual Bin 30 PPM (HPLJ 4100) for 800$ over 5 years ago. It has never broken down and rarely jams. A little math:
5 * 12 = 60 months of ownership
60 * 50 = 3000 would have been the rental cost
3000 – 800 = 2200 amount saved compared to renting
Thus I saved $2200, own the printer, and pay nothing monthly.
In my experience it’s an inverse relationship: The less you pay “up front” the more you pay overall. It’s a much better option to buy rather than lease a car if you can pay cash.
As to the benefit of 100 PPM over 30 PPM: Instead of printing 2 sets of a 150 page loan package in 3 minutes it takes me 10 minutes. While the second set is printing I have just enough time to scan the first set visually to check for problems “at the table”. I could not look at 150 pages in 3 minutes, so the faster printer would not really save me any time.

I have a client who is renting a dual tray high speed HP printer for $50 per month. She rents from a small local company who rents to movie studios, etc. Wouldn't it be worth it to rent a printer that prints 100 PPM instead of buying it and having to deal with breakdowns, etc?
Smart idea!
