It's heart breaking to have to make a very elderly lady delay signing her trust papers because she has no valid ID or witnesses who can identify her. I was called by her lawyer son to their home today for a few signatures after I told him on the phone I'd need a valid I.D. Apparently a former notary at his office had no problem notarizing this lady without a valid ID before, so this man was very pissed off at me for turning him down. She provided a U.S. Passport that expired in 2006.

I didn't help matters at all with certain things I said that came out wrong such as "if you don't have a valid ID it could be very serious because you're considered nobody". l to get this this home and was disappointed to say the least. That really set off her lawyer son who began saying other notaries had no problem notarizing her and that people know who she is. I just wish I hadn't said that.

The moral of the story is be careful what you say, better to say very little and understand how upset people will be for your not being able to notarize their document. The lawyer called me back to apologize after he read the law on it and told me it's a very difficult situation because his mother is agoraphobic and therefore fearful of leaving the home and will have to go to the DMV now. He asked if I would be willing to come back in a few weeks.

The lady looks like she's only got a year or two left. In any event just wanted to share to be careful not to make people even more upset then they already are with unnecessary comments.

Sincerely yours,

Notary's Life
