Welcome to the Forum Mel,
When you get that callback and they have their form: You might mention that the POA is more often surrendered upon use, rather than being a show and keep. Thus, often more than one is required and you can earn additional fee. It all depends on their situation. If someone is issuing a POA to their attorney to attend a closing - one is probably all that is required. However, if the hubbie is giving wifie POA because he is going to be away a while, more than one is probably needed. I have done up to a dozen in one visit. Most first time users of the POA don't know that more often than not, it must be surrendered upon use and not retained. "A photocopy of a notarized document is generally not accepted as a notarized document" - one sure example is using a POA to open a safe deposit box. The bank will retain the original to protect themselves if ever challenged. More than one POA costs more than doing one POA. Of course it's not linear - if the fee is 50 for one, it should not be 150 for three.

Thank you Linda and Jeremy for the replies, they made me feel confident that I did not sacrifice a possible income opportunity! re: Lilasglass, I have made up a flier that holds multiple business cards and have visited nursing homes and assisted-living facilities (the administration offices) and asked them to post my cards and recommend me to residents. I plan to do the same at area hospitals and senior apartment complexes. But mainly, my leads so far have come from FREE BUSINESS LISTINGS on 123Notary, Google, Yahoo, Yellow Pages.com, YELP, and any others I could locate by simply GOOGLING: Free online business listings. Most of these search engines offer geographic searching for users, so people who see that I am in their local area, call me. I have yet to market to escrow companies even tho I am certified by NNA as a signing agent..I'm a little hesitant to plow right into that even though that's where the money is..I hope! |

Hi Melody,
You say that you are a new mobile service and are marketing yourself "rather successfully", will you share what you are doing to market yourself?

Power of Attorney forms are often forms with many blanks for "someone" to fill in. These blanks could describe what powers the grantor is giving to the grantee. It is easy to fill out a power of attorney form and notarize the signatures. However, these forms may not cover all the bases legally, and may or may not be accepted wherever they might be needed to be accepted. Banks typically have their own power of attorney forms and will not recognize other forms no matter how good they are.
It is better obviously to have an attorney make recommendations and draw up a power of attorney. Additionally, whomever might be a custodian of the document, i.e. a particular bank, doctor, or insurance company should be consulted to -- if applicable.

I am 24hr mobile notary in California without experience. Want to break into signing, but meanwhile I'm marketing my services in my area somewhat successfully, but it is "baptism by fire". Today I got a call from a woman who asked if I have POA forms. Her father is competent but becoming forgetful and wants to give her POA before he "loses it" altogether. I felt that I would violate the prohibition against giving legal advice if I recommended any certain forms for her. She was open to my referring her to an elder attorney, so I looked one up in her area. I also suggested she might go to Legalzoom if she prefers to try to do it herself. I figured there might be a need for further estate planning so I recommended the elder attorney as her best approach. Is there a better way I could have handled it? |
