Good tip to record check numbers received.
I use a spreadsheet to track jobs and payment status. It includes the job date, job number, invoice date, amount due, due date, payment date and check number. When payment is received, I color code the amount due to green to show that it is paid. Late payments may be color coded as yellow or red.
How are others tracking jobs and payments? Are you using a spreadsheet or other software? |

Do you keep all check numbers recorded in your records. You better!! Companies will pay you for several jobs with a particular check. If you don't keep track of the check number in your records, they will say that they paid you for another particular job on that check number, when they didn't. They are counting on you to be bad at record keeping. They make it very deceptive. They will give you a check, and sometimes it doesn't say which job its for. If you have been doing several signings a month for a particular company, this is horrible.
If a company can not clearly document what you are being paid for, that is a definitive sign that they are fishy and that you should avoid working for them. Ideally, you should get a separate check for each job with the borrower's name in the notes section of the check. Signing companies are very stubborn and wouldn't change their ways to save their own life which is why 80%of them have perished.
