I frequently run into this. The way I handle this type of request is to provide signing service contacts if the request is coming from a signing service. If the request is being made by a title company, then I only offer title company references. By providing references of like companies, there is little chance you would be coughing up your client list for someone else to use. (There have been unscrupulous signing services asking for references, then contact those references to solicit business. Not very ethical.)

It rarely happens that signing companies (escrow, title, etc.) would request references [At least it never happened to me]. I think all it is necessary is to show your experience/knowledge in the field + have adequate insurance. It might be a different story if you are seeking full time employment with those companies. I would be careful with providing “too much information” and stamping the application (besides, it is illegal to place the stamp without the appropriate notary wording). I would assume that a reputable company would know that, and wouldn’t be asking for it.

May be a dumb question, but how do others handle when companies want you to list other companies that you have done work for and want contact info. I am uncomfortable with this. Not that I am worried about the response from the other companies - my work has a good reputation with my repeat customers, but why would you advertise that you are looking for more work and may be less available to them. Or if too many people start asking for input, the companies will get tired of responding, or the companies have different groups that handle different lenders... I could go on, but you get my point. I have offered names of clients that have agreed to give statements, I have feed-back forms from previous clients that I can provide, but they want too much personal info IMHO - your ss# (I use an EIN), your notary stamp on their application (which I do not do)... Even when you have been background screened. I am still building my client base and hate to not be considered by a number of companies because of this issue. Anyone's thoughts or experiences?
