I recently bought a Brother 5340D as a backup to my Lexmark and added a tray for legal. It works fine, but while the speed rating of my Brother at 32 is higher than the Lexmark 642 (30 ppm), it is not as fast. The cost per copy is higher if you have substantial volume on the Brother machines unless you do not seriously cut corners on toner and drums in my opinion.
Unlike many others, I've not been a big fan of multi-purpose printers. My office is equipped with three networked computers, three laser printers (one laser color, one large sized document inkjet, and two dual tray lasers) a separate high speed scanner, an old Canon copier and an HP fax machine. When one goes, it gets replaced with something better. That has been the path as technology continues to change so rapidly. But, a multi-function unit would use less room.
Perhaps my thinking was swayed because of past furniture purchases. We had a small family room in our first home. It was big enough for the normal stuff, including a couch and it served as sort of a guest room. So the couch was one that made into a bed. We had three different units over the years. While all of our other beds were comfortable, the fold out units never really were and the couch in the living room was far more comfortable than the ones that turned into a bed. Or, looking at this another way, sometimes a Swiss Army knife that has 32 blades is impressive, but may not be appropriate for doing one task for very long. Just my opinion. |

I have a Brother MFC 9420CN....love the machine but the replacement toners are a small fortune. I don't refill toner or by the knock-off or compatible brands. My hubby insists I only buy the geniune Brother toner cartridges. |
