I have a Samsung Intercept Android smartphone on Virgin Mobile, unlimited talk, email and data service for $60/month and no contract. I cancelled my Verizon service with a BlackBerry due to frequent dropped calls and weak signals. I now have better service at a lower price.

Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint network, but has less coverage in rural areas. However, my smartphone also uses Wi-Fi, so I can connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot at a coffee shop, restaurant or public library in a rural area.

My phone has a slide-out keyboard which is great. I use a Navigation app or view/print out a Google map to find destinations. I don't use a separate GPS device.

I don't have a wireless card for my PC. I am planning to try using an app named PDANet to tether my notebook PC to my smartphone as a wireless modem. Haven't tried it yet. Anyone using PDANet?

I have used my smartphone camera to photograph borrower ID when they forgot to make a copy. Then I print a copy of the ID and send it back with the doc package.

I can send/receive/view edocs as email attachments. I can also send/receive/view faxes on my smartphone using RingCentral and their phone app. Also can check news headlines, weather, sports scores, stock market, favorite websites, etc. while on the go. Can't imagine running a small business without a smartphone. Very valuable tool. Happy customer with Virgin Mobile.

Next goal is to set up a mobile Wi-Fi office in my car to be able to print/scan/copy/fax/email documents in the field.

It's hard to keep up with technology. A new phone comes out then a few months later it is a relic and something newer comes out. My dear sweet hubby, who used to complain about cellphones (i.e. what did people do before cell phones - they should be banned - look at that driver...on the cell phone again...and see, I only use my phone for 20 minutes a month...people yak too much...yada yada yada) did a 360 on me recently. I fell on to the couch when he said he wanted a new smart phone with web and a bluetooth. I said "Who are you and what have you done with my husband?" LOL!!!

Do not know about the iphone, but I have an Android form Verizon and it has been great for business. I have a data pkg at a reasonable price and it has helped to grow my business and decrease my travel. I have both and email and a gmail acct. Use each for different reasons.

www.cnet.com <- excellent source for info & reviews for just about anything that's technological, including cellphones & even software.

No experience here with iphones, but I do have an HTC Droid and have learned to love it. I finally got a 'smart' phone when my phone plan allowed for unlimited everything (calls/data/text) at my same monthly fee of $60/mo. Back when those plans were $200/mo ...no way.

What I did do that I'm pretty glad I did - rather than have my 'regular' e-mail address sent to the phone, I got another e-mail account (gmail) and only have that one forwarded to my phone. I'm extremely judicious about who I give THAT e-mail address to, and I don't list it anywhere. Others I know will absolutely disagree, and want ALL e-mail to go through their phone ... I'm just not 'there' yet, I guess.

There were many changes and upgrades in the mobile industry since first post; I am just curious to find out what are the experiences now with the iPhone G4?

Hi tech phones are great for those that have or want to make the time to use them the way they were designed to be used. But, I have a laptop with a wireless card that allows for me to stay connected to whatever is out there. The car is equipped with an add on Garmin GPS for finding those streets and turns without having to search for them or cause traffic delays. The estimated time of arrival is reasonably accurate and allows me to judge whether I should call a borrower and let them know if I’ll be a minute or more late. The office is equipped with all of the other high tech devices needed to stay on top of this work.

But my phone is not really high tech. In fact it has texting blocked after receiving several annoying ads. If the kids or grand kids need to reach me, they can call, e-mail, come over or do whatever they need to do - but they cannot text me. I watched a granddaughter get hooked on the constant texting and was amazed at how it took over her life for awhile. Not for me. But the phone does have about 2 gb of music to listen to when out walking and has a headphone and mike that cuts in if a telephone call does come.

I went ahead and invested in the G1 phone from T-Mobile about a month ago. I really love this phone. The google map feature is great and I can check my email on the go. The only thing I can't do is open pdf attachments on my phone but that has not caused a problem for me since I am on my computer often enough to print confirmations and docs.

Thanks for all your advise.

I purchased the Verizon Blackberry Storm and it has been worth the investment for the following reasons:

1) eSignings - In Alabama there are still people who don't have internet at home. I can take my laptop computer and plug it into my Blackberry to conduct eSignings.

2) Ring Volume - I know this sounds corny but it is true. The "loud" volume on this phone is REALLY loud. When I leave the phone in another room I can hear it and get to it before it goes to voicemail.

3) GMAIL - On my old smartphone I had to log into the internet and then log into my GMAIL account to check emails. Now, all my emails show up immediately on my phone screen. When docs are sent to me I can immediately respond that I have them. There are 2-3 companies who email me about closings. Now I can find out about those opportunities immediately.

I'll stop there. I'm sure I can come up with more reasons why it made sense for my business. If you haven't already done so...UPGRADE ASAP.

If your current phone doesn't do the things you need it to do then it would be a wise investment to upgrade. I have a Treo 800, it has all the bells and whistle and does what I need it to do. I hear the apple iphone is great as is the blackberry.

I've been seriously considering buying an iphone or the T-Mobile version, G1 phone. Right now I have just a regular cell phone. I can read my email sometimes, but on my current phone it's super sloooow. I get very frustrated because I can't check my email on the go. I would like to be able to veiw pdf files from my phone, and forward email. Also, does the gps on these phones work well? What other applications do you use? How many of you fellow notaries have a cool high tech phone? Is it worth the extra money? Any feedback would be great.
