I no longer have a land line to send/receive from a fax machine or all-in-one printer. I use my Android smartphone as my primary phone. I try to avoid using fax and prefer to scan docs using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on my Canon MX700 all-in-one printer to create a PDF file. Then I send the PDF file as an email attachment.

If I need to send/receive a fax, I use RingCentral.com They have a Fax 500 plan for $7.99/month that allows up to 500 fax pages per month. You can choose a local or toll-free fax number. I do not publish my fax number. You can send/receive faxes by email on your PC or your smartphone. They have a free phone app to download for smartphones.

If you also want a separate business phone number, you can choose their Mobile Pro plan that offers a local or toll-free voice/fax number for $9.99/month. Incoming voicemail and faxes arrive as attachments in your email inbox. You can forward incoming calls to your smartphone.

If you have Iphone you can create pdf and email docs instead of having to even bother faxing back at all. All the companies I work for really love having the docs within 5 mins of the signing. Another thing is look into Fujitsu Portable scanner few hundred dollars but with a converter in the truck thus makes me truly mobile with the 5 apps I use for notary work.

App is PDFReader and if you are not that computer literate prob would say this is not for you )

Warmly,

Tonie

I also use efax. One handy feature is to use it as a scanner. I have a scanner but it is a flatbed and not practical for 20 pages. With efax, I can send a fax to myself and receive the 20 pages as a PDF. Just right for forwarding. It's a simple function to log into efax and set your account to receive fax as PDF. I prefer to send as email rather than fax 20 pages and efax makes this easy to do. Especially handy when the PDF needs to go to multiple destinations.

My experience with efax is from two years ago. 40% of the faxes simply were either coming through late or not at all. However the costs of printing out with a laserprinter save on the cost of cartridges which are used with a regular fax machine. laserprinting might cost 2 cents per page vs. 15 cents with a small fax machine.

Maybe things have gotten more reliable in the last two years. I think having efax as the fax # on file is a good idea providing that you have a backup of a physical fax just incase the efax doesn't work or doesn't operate fast enough.

I used to have incoming fax but am totally away from it now. I found that much of what was coming in was wasteful and unnecessary. I have resolved to keep outgoing fax only for documents which need to be faxed back. But then again, many times I scan and email the docs saving myself a phone call. If I cannot scan them, then I will fax them. I also have my companies email me the confirmation. In turn, I have eliminated a telephone number together with its bill.

Unless you have an office with staff that sends and recieves more than 10 faxes a day, and requires hardcopy of each to be filed, I fail to see where a dedicated fax MACHINE could possibly be any benefit.

Now, in my office I have a dedicated fax "machine" but it's the last notebook computer I had used for a couple of years (an HP 700Mhz P3) before my last upgrade, and while it's only task is send and recieve faxes, it's far better than a fax machine. AND it could also be a backup machine for far more if needed, like internet browser and accounting software use!

1st, junk faxes (and don't tell me that you never get any IF you have a fax machine!) simply get deleted, and never use up paper or toner.

2nd, all needed faxes can be saved indefinately, or forever if you need to, easily on the harddisk.

3rd, if there's no need to print a page at all, DON'T!

4th, my setup with a $40 USB flatbed scanner is far cleaner in both sending and printing than any but the most expensive dedicated FAX machine ever will be.

At the price you can buy a used notebook computer these days, it hardly pays to even consider a dedicated fax machine.

As far as your question on e-mail and edoc capabilities, I believe email is as nessessary as a phone number these days to be taken seriously as a business.

And if you want business from everybody, edoc capabilities and a PCL4 capable laser printer are mandatory, and only about $350 or less.

I suppose you could do without depending on where you live and who your customers will be, but why take a chance at losing ANY business because you're not fully ready to service?

I'm curious to know which is better: having a fax machine or a computer fax program.

Or better yet, is either really necessary if you have e-mail and edoc capabilities?

Thanks for your input!
