Legalization is the "tax" imposed by various nations to permit a document to enter their country. It is a "visa" for documents.
I have not checked out "fast passport processing" yet......

We are not going to see any increase in work due to property values decreasing country wide. There is no equity in many areas. Lots of homeowners are in over thier heads due to this and the appraisals that come in will not allow them to refi. I agree that after the election things will start to stabalize. We need a sellers market not a buyers market for the property values to start rising again.

I looked at your listing and it seems to be excellent in all respects. The whole industry is slow now. Yellow pages are another way to market yourself. They can be risky. You have to know how effective each book for each city is, and the only way to learn is by experience. Big cities usually get better results rather than their suburbs. The contract for yellow pages is a year. It could be worth it if you want to get some good jail, hospital and office jobs for notarization on the side.

Thanks very much to all who replied. I appreciate all the words of encouragement and the many good ideas for diversifying. Many of those ideas are new to me so it looks like I have some homework to do. Not like I've got any thing better to do, right? Actually this month has shown improvement. Still slow but at least I am getting some work. Thanks again!

Ken hit the nail on the head you have to diversify!! If you work in a state that has no restrictions on travel fees and a decent fee you can market your regular mobile services in addition to some of the things that Ken mentioned I got a couple of magnetic signs for the car and have started to advertise in some of the neighbor newspapers...as well as visit the VA hospital and convalescent homes in the area. Be creative folks!!

I agree with Ken. I have a travel agency, income tax preparation. I also put my copy/fax machines to work. I also want to get into fingerprinting but the only place that I can find that teaches how to do proper fingerprinting is in Sacramento. I'm 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
Ken, what is Legalization? Let me know how you go about getting into the "fast passport processing" I might be interested in adding that to my business.

I've said it before and will say it again: "Diversify and Prosper"
There are other things one can do with a Notary Commission. I process Apostille's (truly simple to do - a bit complex to figure out procedure). Obtain Legalizations (same story). And do Fingerprinting in addition to the Mobile Notary / Signing Agent function. I am looking into the role of "Passport Rush Processing".
You need to "ring the bell to get them into the church" - do you advertise effectively? The local chamber of commerce probably has "business card exchanges" - free - and a great lead getter. Did you put your card on the bulletin board at the laundromat? Got some nice leads from folks with nuttin to do but read the cards......
Does the local hospital know about you? Lots of POA and Will work there. Spruce up your web site - or get one - put your bio there so clients will "feel they know you" - it helps a lot. We now have to "work to get work" - those sitting around waiting get none.

Jeremy takes the prize from the philosophical aspect!
"Eventually, something will happen."
I absolutely agree with that! |

I've said it other places...
I think things will "magically" get better after the Presidential election (regardless of who wins)...
Why?
Because our economy is fundamentally sound and consumer confidence will return as soon as the new direction is set...also, things are not as bad as the doom and gloom crowd would have us all believe...
This was the trend prior to 2000 and although there was no mortgage melt-down then, we all recall the boom that followed...

I really think that the government is trying to figure out ways to level out the banking and mortgage crisis. Eventually something will happen, and business for notaries should go from dismall to moderate. I think things will change in 2009 or 2010. This can't go on forever.

Hi Kelly,
Try and stay positive. It is vacation time for many so coupled with our mortgage woes it is really slow for many. As I do renewals I am finding that it depends on what state you reside that determines the work load. This however has always been the case. So just hang in there it will get around to you. As suggested you need to take this time to heavily market yourself.
Good Luck!! God Bless!

Hi Kelly, I passed panic mode about 2 weeks ago and moved in to FAITH mode. I also checked my cell phone to make sure it was working. I even looked for a job but with 50,000 unemployed here in AZ that was to no avail. I had 21 loans in June and 25 this month which is about a 50% drop first quarter 08 and a 70% drop from the previous 3 years. I finally decided to take the extra time I have and do some extra marketing as well as touch base with established clients. And I also reinstated my RE license and I'm taking some training classes that I never had time to do 3 years ago.
If knowing you are not in the boat alone helps then keep that in mind. Keep your integrity in place, stay positive, protect your assets and pray big time. The Prez signed the mortgage relief bill so we can hope it will get us all going soon. Best of luck! |

I am in full panic mode as my workload has plummeted this month. Last month I signed 30 loans - not great but could be worse. This month so far I have signed 5 loans. I had to check and see if my cell phone was broken (Unfortunately it wasn't.)
I am in the Seattle/ Tacoma Area of Washington and in over 3 years of Notary work I have never seen a month like this. I wish I knew if it was going to rebound or if this is the death throes.
Is anyone else seeing a massive slump? HELP!!!
