Diane, get yourself a FEIN (takes 5 min. online at the IRS website) then supply that number at all times instead of your SSN. Unfortunately, there's no getting around this requirement as they do need SOME form of ID number in order to pay you.

Some of the signing companies want SSN#, copies of my bond, etc. before they will pay. I'm very nervous about supplying this very personal and potentially harmfull to me information to companies that I don't know. I did a couple of times, now I'm very concerned that this information could fall into the wrong hands. Has anyone else had this experience?

You can also do a third thing - insist on a check "up front" - either sent with the docs - or fedex overnight. I actually have had several checks sent with the docs when I argued that I am a licensed official and they have no "ID" or business license. My arguement was based on who would a bank extend credit to? A public official or an "unknown" - does not work often - but can be used as a last resort in place of declining the job.

You may work less but at least you won't be working for free or be out of any additional expenses.

Good Luck!

I agree with your sentiments; however, I suspect signing services would either refuse or decide to hire someone else if we started demanding references. Our best weapon is the quiet investigation as crooks are unlikely to admit their poor reputations and they are also unlikely to provide us with references.

You are correct that crooks are out there with no conscience about exploiting notaries. Should I call these folks sociopaths?! Hmmmm.

There are some companies that I refuse to work with and there is ample antidotal evidence on this board that these companies may or may not pay, but they have a track record of unprofessionalism that companies such as mine refuse to work with them.

Life is too short for self-flagellation!

PLEASE do a search on a company when you receive a request for a signing. If you don't have an opportunity to check them out while on the phone with them take the job and then do the search here on 123notary.com and on Notary Rotary and if they have a bad reputation then you can do one of two things; one, inform them of their bad reputation and let them know that you are willing to give them a one shot try or second; call them back and also inform them of their bad reputation and give them their job back. This way you go into it with your eyes open.
