Her first mistake was accepting a lowball offer in the first place. My guess...a Signing Service intent on taking the lions share for making a few phonecalls and appointment setting.

To determine your travel fees, don't forget to base your expense on the true cost to own and operate your car, not just the cost of gas or the Federal mileage allowance.

Edmunds has a good calculator. You'll enter cost of gas in your area, your make and model or car, year of car, and more information.
http://www.edmunds.com/tco.html?mktcat=tco&kw=true+cost+to+own&mktid=ga56677242

I have a nice car and it costs 75c per mile to own and operate.

I spoke with a new NSA this past weekend. She took an eDoc job for $75.

The drive was 100 roundtrip. It took 3 hours round trip travel time plus 45 minutes being stuck in bad traffic.
Let's say her car costs only 50c per mile to own and operate.
50c x 100 miles = $50.

That left $25 for all her other expenses, taxes, and time. She probably lost money on this job.

Please check out the Edmunds calculator today to see what your per-mile travel cost is so you quote your signings appropriately.

Good luck with your notary career,
LauraV
