I quit accepting calls from MortgageDocs quite awhile ago. Low pay+slow pay=NO WAY! The last person to call from their office was quite shocked that I turned down business, but I explained why and hung up.

Mona, I'm with you. On this and other NSA forums, the consensus is that the fees are dropping for no real apparent reason. My guess is in part because of the middle men (SS) companies that have proliferated over the last couple years. Other reasons may be because fewer refis are happening, so more providers are vying for less business.

I got into the NSA business in 2004, at a time when most packages were sent to me via overnight carrier, and for which I was paid upwards from $125. I had lower cost of doing business, and was treated respectfully by the companies with which I worked. As time passed, multiple suppliers of my type service, middle men and fewer opportunities have evolved, and now the fees offered for more work and effort are ridiculous. More rules and less respect do not make a professional happy.

While I agree something needs to be done, I have yet to see or come up with a viable solution. I am willing to be flexible, but I am NOT willing to be taken advantage of. While I do fewer closings, my other business is flourishing, so I'm not as pinched as others. But I do feel for the industry.

Have Seal, Kan Travel! When you need a document notarized, I cover all of NE Oklahoma from I-35 to I-40 to the state borders. Call: 918-798-8908.

I know this is an extremely difficult thing to do, but the ridiculous wages for loan signings must be addressed somehow, some way!

I requested a vendor app from MortgageDocs LLC (then saw the negative comments in this forum). When I received the 32-page document I wrote back to them with the following:

Thank you for sending the notary application. I do have a question – I charge $100 for e-docs – I do not accept loan signings for less. If that is in line with your terms I am happy to complete my application; if not, please confirm.

Thank you! I look forward to the possibility of working for your firm
.

The reply:

On occasions we do pay a higher fee but it would be very limited. We can add you to our system with your fees and note your profile but I am not sure it would be beneficial for you.

My response:

Thanks for your candor. It would be mutually beneficial if the industry acknowledged the efforts and (significant) expenses involved in the valuable service NSAs provide. The lack of loyalty or recognition of excellence ensures stagnating/declining/minimum wages and undervalues our contribution to the process. It is unnecessary and a real shame.

I know from my other professions there will always be someone out there willing to work for less, however, the dramatic decline in payment to NSAs is appalling (a few years ago I consistently earned $150 to $175 w/o printing docs) and cannot be explained away by the state of the economy any longer. We, as a group, must take control of the pricing structure and of those among us, for whatever reason, who are hurting our industry by working for less than minimum wage. Our national organizations, like the NNA, are not designed to protect us (it had a multiple page spread in the May issue of The National Notary highlighting First American as an industry leader telling us what we need to know about regs, training, and certification!) They (as an industry leader) need to hear from us about integrity, fair wages, and merit pay!

we need to give serious consideration to how we are going to join together to help ourselves, rather than wait around for change that certainly will not come unless we make it happen.

I challenge you, my colleagues, to use this forum as a call to action, a springboard to rising up and making some real noise! Until then, we can all be certain, nothing will change (for the better).

Are you with me?

Patti
