I would have sent an email with the date, time, address, business name (phone number would be great too) and NAME of the person who accepted the package. Send that email immediately after handing the package over the counter.
REAL TIME informing with details is the best you could have done.
Basically, the above information contains exactly the same info as you would receive on a drop off receipt. Including the phone number gives your client someone to call, other than you, to "trace" the package.

I did ask for a receipt when I dropped it off, but was informed that they only give receipts for UPS packages. I could've just dropped it off in one of their collection boxes for all the good it did me to take it to Office Depot. The nearest town that I could take it to as an alternative is about 50 miles away and I don't go there often.

When you drop off a package ALWAYS ask for a "drop off receipt". This gives you proof of tendering to the shipper AND causes them to "scan" the package which enters it into their tracking system.
Once you have that "drop off receipt" in hand you have proof of shipping. A REALLY good agent will scan the receipt and email it to whoever hired you (return email of the confirmation ties it all together).
If not scanned when dropped off - it can take a long time for the tracking number to be "in the system".

I had my first closing Saturday evening, and everything went well. I came home and faxed back everything, and on Sunday morning I dropped the Fed Ex package off for pick up at my local Office Depot. This was supposed to be overnighted on Monday night. Now, the signing service says the package wasn't shipped. I checked the tracking number myself, and there is no information for it. I will check with Office Depot when they open and see if it still happens to be there. I don't really know what else I can do about it. Has this ever happened to any of you, and what did you do about it?
