Certainly changing the name is a big deal and should be discussed with the hiring party, and find out how they want it done (provided the notary is confident beyond a reasonable doubt the name in the notarial certificate is a legitimate name of the person who appeared and signed). But there are as many certificates with wrong states and counties as correct certificates. If anyone involved in real estate on a regular basis were rejecting venue changes the whole industry would have ground to a halt decades ago.

Hi Ken, I changed the verbiage on the original post to clarify if the areas concerned were within the bodies of documents or the notary certificate area. I am writing about both actually, although each section should be handled with a separate strategy.

For wrong names on signature sections of documents, just initial below the last several letters of the surname, and leave the rest to the processor
"Signature Section of Documents" are in the BODY of the document. The only place as a notary I would initial is a change made by me, in the notary section.
It was not clear in your post. I think you are suggesting the borrower initial as quoted above. If so, I still have a problem with suggesting someone initial and have someone ELSE make the changes....

More and more these days, notaries think that it is socially acceptable to cross out information in venues and initial, or cross out wrong spellings of names in certificate forms OR in the bodies of documents.
Best practices -- according to me, means that you use a fresh acknowledgment form rather than crossing anything out in the acknowledgment section. WHAT IF, the county recorder that is going to record the deed you are notarizing doesn't like the cross out? If you cross out a county in a venue, it is less critical, butwhat about an incorrectly spelled name?
Although many county recorders have become more liberal, not all of them are liberal. You can lose a client if you mess up an acknowledgment.
For wrong names on signature sections of documents, just initial below the last several letters of the surname, and leave the rest to the processor.
Better safe than sorry -- avoid cross outs if you can. Actually - scratch that.. just think about the consequences of the cross outs should anything get rejected by anyone who is a document custodian.
