Usually telling them upfront that I can do a signing but ONLY if I have docs not a minute later than a certain time works and if not, to please automatically re assign it to someone else. Now sometimes, they go ahead and send the docs late and still expect me to pull it off. Boy are they pissed when you tell them you cant do it. Not like I didnt warn them.

I generally call to confirm the appt right away. If I am really busy I will email whoever necessary and let them know that I will need docs ahead of time as I am "back-to-back" or if there is a long drive involved. If they don't get me the docs on time then I tell them they'll have to find another notary, which is often difficult given the rural area we live in, so they will usually accomodate me! I have learned not to sit around and waste my day waiting on docs. I go about my usual schedule and if Escrow wants to screw it all up that is on them, not me. With "open time" appts when they don't have docs ready I will call the borrower right away to see what times they are available, but I am usually hesitant to set a firm time. Also, if I don't have the docs within an hour of the appt, I will usually give the borrower a call and inform them of the situation. I don't want to hold them up until the last minute either.

It seems like the past month I have had a lot of postponements, which is upsetting when you have turn down other jobs. I guess it is just part of the business, so I just accept it.

I guess I don't need money this badly. I am not taking any more 6 p.m. closings and the documents are not ready when you call me at three and maybe they will be there by 5. Yes, don't call until you have your documents ready to send". I guess some people like living on the edge but I don't see how you can preveiw the docs to see if they are all there on time....I assume if the appt. is for 6 p.m. there is a reason for this....and calling borrowers on the phone to tell them Id don't have the documents is really poor service. I don't undersand why they even set up these appts to begin with. I have asked everyone I know who has refinanced lately, and there are many and they all said they gave a couple of times, and even two days. If I am being held to a perfect job then I think the company should do their due diligence too...cut off a time and if you don't have your docs ready by 2 -3 then do it the next day. And then they have the gall to say they want to pay $70....I don't think so. Walgreens pays $15-17 an hr in my area....and a lot less stress.

Another great facebook discussion. We asked if you have ever said - don't call until the documents are ready. Some notaries have the "hurry up and wait" philosophy. Others don't like being kept waiting for something that might never happen. Keep track of who leaves you high and dry, and jack up their rate for next time. They deserve it for ruining your afternoon.

You are missing out on other jobs while you are waiting for their irresponsibility by the way. You just lost $200 in business!

One notary says, they can have the docs ready 2 hours ahead of time, or they can think about rescheduling.

Perhaps, notaries should have a policy. You should really think out what your policy is. 2 hours ahead minimum? 1 hour ahead? 3 hours? It is up to you, and depends on how much demand there is for your service. If you are in demand, you can set your own terms.
