Wow! I've had a similar story when signing paperwork at an auction- the guy came in to buy the property and paid in cash- the escrow counted the money- i have never seen that much money in cash before (only in movies). The property was sold for $390,000.00 - interesting experience

Job started out very unusual and got more so.

Client calls me for mobile notary job, just one notarization, to be done in 3 days. Pays immediately on PayPal my standard fee. A day later I receive a second payment (same amount) - with an email that they will be wanting 2 copies, eg: the notarization total is now up to 2.

Making sure to be on time, I meet my client in the lobby with what appears to be a lunch bag. He tells me he is the agent of the landlord and is buying out a tenant to get her to move out. His elbow hits the bag and knocks it off the table. Out falls not a tuna salad sandwich; but a LOT of currency - hundreds, fifties and a few twenties. LOTS of money; certainly well over ten thousand dollars!

Normally I would help out with something dropped on the floor. But, in this case I kept my seat and watched the agent stuff the bills back in his brown paper bag. After a little while the tenant appears, agent and tenant speak briefly. The tenant takes the bag and proceeds to count the cash. Tenant must have been a bank teller - I never saw money move so fast as she confirmed the total.

The tenant had proper ID and signed a landlord provided document and the notarization proceeded routinely - both copies.

I sure wish I had had that apartment!
