Today I'm on line at the office of the New York County Clerk to have some documents "authenticated" - a local procedure whereby my signature is verified and a little form added to the notarization. While there I overhear this exchange: cc=county clerk wi=walk in "customer"

cc good morning how may I help you
wi what is the cost of a notarization
cc there is no charge
wi fine, may I please have one
cc ok, your document please
wi what are you talking about
cc I need your document to notarize it
wi I don't have a document I just want a notarization
cc in order to give you a notarization I need your signature
wi fine, I will sign what you give me as long as the notarization is free
cc no, you must give me something you sign
wi so you want to sign something
cc yes, but I sign after you sign your document
wi OK, give me what you want me to sign
cc do you know what notarization is
wi yes, you already told me they are available at no charge
cc (LOUDLY - NEXT!!!)
