I got a call from India today. The guy spoke very broken English, and wouldn't stop talking when I had a question. He claimed to be in Brooklyn, but no call center in New York would hire someone who can't pronounce people's names or introduce himself properly.

He told me that my PC was infected, and that I needed their technical assistance. I tried to ask him who he thought I was, my location, and the location of the burueau who informed him that there was a problem with my PC. He told me about some centrally located bureau, but I didn't believe him.

He tried to get me to type in some text using ctrl-R.. the text was "eventvwr". I googled this word and got

In any case, I told the caller that since I didn't know who he was and had not heard of his company -- his company name had the word "happy" in it which is a word only Chinese people use in company names.

So, I suspected that no good could come from this mystery caller in the Brooklyn region of Maharashria -- and Microsoft's site confirms that my instincts were correct.
