On some of these foreign documents, such as the one I recently work on for a Supreme Court Canadian divorce related lawsuit filing, a Canadian's attorney's requests can be ambiguous so I felt it was important for me to clarify before proceeding. I thought I was coming back to my office for one notarization but it turned out to be additional sigs for the 10 other exhibits.

I clarified what the attorney wanted over the phone because the client told me I was supposed to simply witness sign the exhibits. I figured that couldn't be done legally since I had already notarized the document. The sig would be in conjunction with the client's signature and a sworn statement stamped onto the Exhibits. I wanted to make sure their request was legitimate since I would have to charge for each notarization. In other words, I didn't want to perform the service and then have them come back saying I shouldn't have notarized the pages charging them all of those fees.

I ended up learning there was no other way I could perform what they were requesting then to notarize each exhibit with the Jurat stamp that amounted to $120. I offered to discount my fee to $80 after the client requested he only pay $65. The charge had no basis in reality, he wanted me to charge $5.00 per signature?

People in Canada don't pay much for notary fees and he was flabbergasted at the charges to file his divorce case. He ended up appreciating my discount since it could have been more I requested.

This guy was the owner of a software company who gets interviewed on television programs. I didn't feel so bad to charge him $80. Would any of you charged him less or offered any discount at all? I thought $120 was a little much. My time was about 30 minutes.

Sincerely yours,
