If something happens and I'm going to end up running late, I let hiring party know along with borrowers so I know they can accommodate. I apologize profusely. Hiring party then has the chance to say they want to reassign the signing to another notary who can keep the original time.

If you kept everyone in the loop and they never objected, and you still did the signing, IMO you still deserve to be paid for your services. Things happen and they happen to all of us at some point or another. Now, the only thing about this is a question - is it in their confirmation and/or instructions that being late is prohibited and they absolutely will not pay if you're late? If that's there and you didn't question it you may have a problem.

I, personally, would still bill for the signing and pursue it - ESPECIALLY after finding out that the security instrument that *I* notarized did, in fact, record, so the loan funded.

Good luck..

Ok,
I have a question to ask. How many notaries out there have been late to a closing to reasons beyond their control? What do you do? How do you handle the situation if the lender or title company or especially the signing service wants to do nothing but scream at you? Is it fair to still complete the signing and then the company decide they are not going to pay you because you were late?
Why is it that the cable guy can say from 8am to 5pm and everyone just sits around waiting for him, but a notary with your mortgage documents has to be there at the exact time quoted, even though we have the same obstacles the cable guy does... traffic, appointments taking way longer than expected, for some of us weather problems...
