You can look up FedEx or UPS shipping/drop box locations for any area from their websites and carry the list with you. That should save some time. The other day I did a signing in an office & they had a FedEx pick up so I left the package there.

I found that when I ask for more money to cover expenses most signing companies have agreed to the increase if it isn't too much. You might try saying that your expenses have increased this year and you need to increase your fees. Most will comply. If not you have to decide if it is worth loosing money to take the job. Probably not if you are doing this often. Sometimes if it is a company that I work for a lot then I will lower my fee for say a seller pkge.

Diana, I could not agree with your point more. Just wish I worked with more companies that paid better. As long as I am well compensated I would not mind doing what is asked of me even if it means takes longer or more gas.

You don't have to used a manned facility. Are there any dropboxes closer? I've been using dropboxes for years and years with no problem.

If not, always ask during the initial canudo call if they can provide their UPS account number...explaining that if FedEx is required, you'll need to increase your fee by $XX to cover additional time/mileage...or call for pickup, which is also more expensive to them. You might also offer the choice of waiving faxbacks or increase the fee.

Also, you are most likely not the only notary in your area with this problem, so others are probably either increasing their fee or slowly going broke.

it is frustrating that sometimes we have to go the extra mile to close the deal....and we are not reimbursed for that. More than that, it is painful to see that the notary gets paid the least amount of all, and yet, the notary is a very important figure in closing the transaction.
Let's do the math:
We normally get about $100 from the signing company to complete a signing (more or less...)
O.K. so,
$25 - makes up for the printing expenses
$30- travel, parking fees, gasoline, car amortization etc. - this is an estimate travel fee to the borrrower
$30- estimated travel fee to the fedex/ups location (if it's far away)
$10/signature standard charge in California, considering that there are about 10 signatures or so per loan, total would be $100

so total estimate to complete one signign is about: $185 (more or less)
...o.k. so we receive only a part of this reimbursment, the rest gets eaten up by the middle man....not cool in my opinion....
my point is: the notary should be paid more for completing a signing...and then there will be no issues with going the extra mile to drop the package at FedEx or UPS etc.,

Last week I went to drop a loan package at my local Postal Annex only to come to find a sign on the door that says that they are out of business. To most this might not seem like a big deal. Until now I took their location for granted.

The next nearest shipping location for FedEx is twenty minutes one way. If a company that I am working for requires fax backs that means that I have 40 minutes round trip from the office to drop the package.

I can ask the signing company to possibly use UPS which is about one mile from me or raise my rates. Unfortunately I am afraid if I raise my rates $10 that I wont receive the same amount of business.

Thanks for listening.
