I thought it over, and I have decided that there are many elements I didn't think about when I first set up my list.
1. Currentness of information. I have decided that if a company suddenly starts getting a rash of payment complaints, I will consider dropping positive comments that were made 2+ years ago. I do not have the technology to easily do that now, but in 2012, I will have it.
2. Orange alert categories. Right now there is only positive, neutral and negative. Negative is for severe payment issues. The Orange area is for neutral comments, but I am going to phase that out and have specific types of issues there. Lowballing, Micromanaging, and Bad Communication will be three new categories. So, we will have FIVE categories on company reviews. Good, lowball, micromanaging, and bad communication
3. Lowballing We all know what this means. The main point of the signing list is so you know ahead of time who is likely to cheat you. If they call you and tell you that they offer $40, then you can look them up on the list of signing companies to learn what you ALREADY LEARNED, which is that they lowball. On the other hand, if you were considering contact them, and then learned that they low-ball, you can save yourself the effort.
3. Micromanaging This includes excessive babysitting, fax backs, and other unneccessary types of headaches.
4. Bad communication I am making this term intentionally vague so it can include rudeness, failure to answer phone calls, and failure to return emails. If they string you along saying the check is in the mail and it isn't, then that falls into this category too.
5. Negative For payments that are 60+ days after the job was done. I might change it to 50+ since I am going to eliminate the neutral category.
6. Things not included We have a NOTES section on our company list. So, if they do things that there is no category for, then the notes will be used to discuss this. A sudden NEW rash of payment complaints can be discussed in the notes. Sending BAD CHECKS is a very serious issue and is best discussed in the notes. Other unusual things can be in the notes. |

Agree! Paying as agreed is about the only thing I can't find out from the company itself. And, sadly, that info needs to be very current as they do tend to fall apart rapidly these days.

I'm thinking that I should do more in the commentary section. That way I can summarize six forum strings each with thirty posts -- all in two sentences. Usually, the notaries complain about the same things with particular companies. Either they babysit, micromanage, don't pay on time, or don't return calls.
My new thought is that I could put comments into categories. I could have a:
(1) Don't return call category, a (2) Micromanaging category, (3) Fax backs, etc. (4) Low Balling
Also, I want a way to decrease the value of the votes from 2008 and 2009, since companies can change and go down hill very quickly!!! Let me know if you can think of any other categories. These types of "complaints" are not bad enough to be negative. They are more annoying than anything else. They are more a cross between neutral and negative. Purely negative is for serious deal-breakers like non-payment, etc.

I totally agree with you, Jeremy - a lot of complaints are so subjective, and a company that has an annoying protocol or doesn't agree to a particular fee shouldn't be shoulder-to-shoulder with companies you have to chase for your money.
Were it up to me, 'star' type ratings should be based solely on payment as agreed. Conversational complaints should be left as that - conversational, w/in the forums. |

Our list of signing companies is regularly updated. We add new companies, and base ratings on what notaries say about the companies. Fast pay and good experience get a positive, mixed feelings get a neutral, and 60+ days no pay or other serious issue gets a negative review.
The issue is that there are many issues that would be better suited to get COMMENTARY rather than a vote. If the company low balls, that is a nuissance, but not a crime. If the company babysits the notary or requires fax backs, it is a headache, but not a reason to call the FBI. If the company calls you 20 times during the signing, that is getting out of hand -- I agree!
Real-time is another issue. Many companies will be okay for years and years. Then, in September 2011, they will get six complaints all at once and ruin their stellar reputation. I have seen this a few times. Maybe the date or year of the review would be helpful too.
So, I have my idea of how to improve on my list. But, what features would the notaries think would be useful on our list of signing companies?
