I was chased out of a house one rainy night by drunks who thought I had something to do with the loan rate being wrong. But if I was pushed down a stairs they better make sure I was out cold otherwise it would be all about me and them. That notary hat would be off in a minute and they would be finding out just what time it is. |

I feel that I am very naive. I never suspected anything when I went to all of the thousands of homes and offices that I had notarial business in. Anything could have happened. I didn't pay that close attention. There were a few times I thought someone was trying to scam the signer (elderly signers). I guess it is different because I am a man. For women, perhaps this job is more dangerous. I can't say.

That has to be the most horrific case of depraved indifference on the part of the signing service that I have ever heard; or can imagine. I'm not one for violence - but that person deserved a punch in the nose!
My "depraved indifference" story is much much less tragic; but also underscores that notaries can be considered as dirt.
It was a winter night and light snow was predicted. The assignment was in the Bronx part of New York City. Most people picture NYC as being a relatively flat terrain. Parts of the Bronx are more like roads in Tibet, narrow, twisting up steeply, without guardrails or sidewalks.
I accepted the assignment confident in my front wheel drive Honda Civic's ability; and having much experience in snow driving. I arrive at 21 Goat Trail Ridge on time and await the Borrower. An hour later, still no borrower; but the weather shifted for the worse. From outside, in the car; my wife informs me (we use walkie talkies) that a "warm air mass" has settled overhead and the (to me) dreaded "freezing rain" has just started. I'm OK with a reasonable amount of snow. Anyone who thinks they can drive in freezing rain, when the temperature of the roadway is about 20 degrees F, is not thinking clearly. Nothing, with the possible exception of total zero visibility fog, is more treacherous. Both scare me, and I refuse to drive in either condition.
With the report that it just started, I make the decision to "abandon ship" and leave for home. The ice was just starting to take hold on the road. And, as I said; that road was twisty, narrow and very very steep. Gingerly I drive down from "Goat Trail Ridge" to the main road where other cars tires had kept the ice from really sticking.
Half an hour later I am home, without incident; but the rain got harder and the ice really became over half an inch - on all roads! We get few ice storms in New York City - but it does happen.
I call the Title Co. and tell them all of the above. The lady screams at me, telling me the borrower was just moments away. I remind her that the borrower was over an hour late when I left. I remind her that the weather conditions and borrower location made for an extraordinarily treacherous driving situation. She only repeated that I should have waited as the borrower was "moments away". I told her that I was thankful to be home without incident and that the city was having a major Ice Storm, with over half an inch of absolute glare sheet ice on cars, roads, trees, and everything else, there were reports of power lines and trees down; many accidents, etc.
She said: "I understand it might be a bit difficult, but you committed to doing this signing. I DEMAND that you leave immediately and return to the signing location and complete your assignment".
I rarely curse. It's a sign of bad manners, poor vocabulary, and reflects poorly upon me as a human being.
On that day, to that individual; I made a rare exception.

I couldn't believe this story when Carmen told me about it. Thank god, the notary is okay now. She had to go to the hospital for close to a week because of this horrific incident.
