Loved the post, Ken. I've been in NYC exactly once and can honestly say that it takes courage to tackle the streets of any of the boroughs -- except --perhaps -- Staten Island. Welcome to the Notary club...the land of snippy title companies, slow payments, unbelievable fax backs, fond memories of overnight courier deliveries, and some pretty nice customers.

The Signing from Hell
Whoever coined the term “beginner’s luck” must have been working for the “other side” – a Title Company. I was a Newbie – green? – so green a 50$ Edoc, two counties away, with fax backs sounded like a goldmine. The job was that, and as you will soon learn; a lot more – and as you probably expect, all bad.
I accepted the signing from hell eagerly. The location sounded “distant” but back ten years ago gas was cheap and I was eager to make the big bucks! Ms. Title had done her homework; she, not me, had checked the weather forecast. The “big day” was scheduled to snow, and not just a few flakes; about 6 inches – enough to make New York City roads more like a turtle race.
The assignment came with what was called “an indirect acquisition”; in my newbie virginity I only glanced at the term when the work order arrived and did not question it. Buried as a footnote was the location where the documents were to be picked up! El Cheepo Title was not going to even ship the docs, I had to go get them! Their location was 50 miles out on Long Island, the day of the snow storm and took over 2 hours just to get there. Thru the whirling snow I drove.
I finally got to El Cheepo Title – in one piece with the car intact! “It will be a while before the docs are printed” they told me. Why, I asked. “It’s kinda big – we had to send out for more paper – but they should be ready soon”. Now I am familiar with the term “piggyback”, but back then it seemed normal for two couples signing to need separate sets of docs. I put the newly printed docs on the back seat and as the suspension lowered wondered about my little car’s clearance vs. the accumulating snow.
Now I was truly “on the hook”. Back thru Manhattan I drove – toward the northern most part of “da Bronx”. It was slow going. If I had known what awaited me I would have stopped at my home in Manhattan and used those humongous document sets in the fireplace – the worst was yet to come!
On location at last! The signing consisted of two couples who only spoke Haitian and were constantly screaming across the table! The 50$ went for Aspirin.
