So, I am a mortgage broker, and I am recently adding to my family and have decided that this job is flexible enough to be able to do both jobs at the same time. About what type of volume should I expect if I were to become a notary in a large metropolis city?

Are there any people out there in Dallas (or a comparable city), and what could I expect? Could I get 10-20 signings a month? If I sign up on the notary websites, about how much should i expect to receive in income/signing? I know that notary fees are usually $150, so should I expect half? Your help would really be appreciated!!! I am having my first child, and would like just a little bit more income.

Thanks!
Brian Morrison

As for your profile, when it lists the various services - jail notarizations, hospital notarizations, affidavits, etc etc - it's asking if you offer those services, not if you have ever done them.

Linda, I went back to check...this is what it says:
I'm experienced with hospital signings.
I'm experienced with jail signings.
I'm experienced with affidavits.
I'm experienced with power of attorney documents.
I'm experienced with business documents.
I'm experienced with notarizing immigration documents.

You basically check off if you've done them before (experienced). I haven't. I changed my answers to 'yes' anyway. Thanks for your input.

THE most important thing before you even do that is to know your state notary laws COLD. You WILL be asked to do things that are illegal (backdating, provide loose ack, etc etc) - you need to know your laws backward and forward - not saying you don't, just saying you should before venturing further.

If you have no experience at all with loan docs then I'd strongly suggest taking a certification course or two; also buy the Signing Registry manual sold on NotRot. I did real estate closings in CT as a paralegal for 25 years - I go back to the day we used to manually type the notes - it's this background that really helps me know what I'm doing when I organize the package and when I sit down with the signers.

As for your profile, when it lists the various services - jail notarizations, hospital notarizations, affidavits, etc etc - it's asking if you offer those services, not if you have ever done them. You can answer "yes" there if you're willing to go to jails, hospitals, do affidavits, powers of attorney - those are general notary items. You can offer general notary services - that's what you're in business for.

I would also suggest you check your website too - your website states "Attorney In-Office Notary Services" - and you state you're looking for a firm to take you on....do not advertise what you can't deliver. Are you an ordained minister or a justice of the peace? Because you offer wedding officiant services in addition to inmate notarizations and marriages - but you don't mention this in your profile.

Thanks Linda. I don't have any experience and that is why I answered no. I am VERY open to doing those types of signings. Do you think I should just change my answers to 'yes' anyway? I may not have any experience but I do know how to verify a signature and read through paperwork etc. Common sense helps too. I have a marketing background so I was always going through long documents, proof reading RFPs etc.

I know about the 'loan' signings in Massachusetts. I was hoping a law firm would take me on. I have a friend who has been doing loan signings for 6 years now. He never took a course or is 'certified'. He learned by experience and works as a contractor for several law firms. His profile in here is worse than mine but he's already established and I don't think he cares.

Eva, you may get more calls if you complete your profile here .... hiring parties may not always go to your website but, rather, will simply skim your profile here; as it stands right now, if they read your profile, they'll be led to believe you don't provide the services they need.

Example: Your profile says you have a laser printer and DSL internet service; however you say "No" to e-doc capability, "No" to jail signings, "No" to hospital signings, "No" to Power of Attorney Documents, "No" to Business Documents, "No" to Immigration Documents; # of Loans signed was left blank and you say NO to Reverse Mortgages (If you have any experience in loan docs you need to include that somewhere)

Also keeping in mind, which I believe you already know, MA is attorney-restrictive as far as notaries doing loan signings.

If I were you I'd tweak my profile and my notes section - that will probably go a long way in helping to get your phone to ring.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. I did get my first call yesterday but I had to turn them down. The $20 for a 21.6 mile trip one way just didn't seem worth it. My friend who has been doing this said I did the right thing.

I started receiving calls a few days after I put my ad up on 123Notary. But that was back in 2005 when things were busy. Business is pretty much dead right now.

Hi,

I am new at this. I was wondering how long it took to get your first call from your listing here. I'm really excited about getting my first signing. At this point, I will have to wait until my business cards are mailed to me before I make my own calls.
