If I were to write for every blog and forum that has asked me to submit material, I wouldn't have any time to do what I do. I already write for one organization, but I do monitor all the others and provide constructive criticism when necessary.

Once again, I WELCOME notaries from specific states who really know their stuff to be a blog guest writer. State specific content is best written by people in those states. But, nobody has volunteered so far!

I agree, Reene. I too have a ritual reading the forums, not just this one but many more, every morning before I start work in earnest. I'm on the computer whenever I'm working which affords me ample time to view and review the 'boards' frequently during the day. Some times, the day is slow and I can post more frequently, but even if the day is a busy day, I'm still monitoring and posting when I feel essential information is needed or is being inaccurately posted.
My biggest gripe with national forums is that many posters forget that notaries and signing agents from across the country read the posts. So whenever state specific information is posted, it needs to be identified as such. A first step is making sure your forum profile shows your state. At least then, readers will have a hint of where the poster is coming from. (Note to Jeremy - This is an opportunity for you to assist all members. Make location a mandatory field in the profile, so when someone posts, the state will be displayed.)

All good points, and I'd like to add one more:
I really don't think the majority of people understand how directly writing in forums brings them business. Forums that are attached or linked to a listing site INCREASE web presence. I've said many times, of the multiple reasons to participate in a forum (and there are multiple reasons), my primary intent is to increase clicks.
As many others do, I get a LOT of new business that finds me on 123. 99% of my new clients come either from here, or through the network I belong to. I'd sure like that to keep on coming, and I include writing on this forum as a form of marketing - with all the other benefits a forum brings.
It's no real surprise that 'drama sells'. Anyone who follows Alexa ratings can see for themselves. If you look at those stats in detail, you can also see very clearly things like WHO is using a site, WHAT they are using it for, and ultimately HOW does that relate to my business.
I get up every morning and drink my coffee while reading/posting because that's how I start my work day. It's a part of my work, it's marketing, it's advertising, it's support of where many dollars originate from, and ...it's fun.
One little thing I'd like to say - for myself, the busier I am, the MORE I'm on the forums throughout the day. I do this every morning, but also when I'm glued to the monitor checking for docs. With all due respect - you're right that a lot of people might frequent forums when they aren't working a lot, but for me it's the opposite. If I'm not working/waiting for docs, I'm not on the computer. |

Notaries need to know these facts about notary forums in general.
Who does the writing? There is a group of two dozen or so notaries at any given time that generally dominate NR's forum, our forum, Facebook, and social media in general. The voices of those notaries are heard, and one could mistakenly believe that their points of views are the only ones out there, or that they represent the majority. Its hard to say if this is even true or not. Additionally, some of these notaries engage in bullying people which makes forums and intimidating place for many newer or more timid notaries. One wrong move and you get eaten alive, and this has happened to dozens of people.
Why do I do so much writing? Many people have told me that I should NOT write on my forum and that the owner of NR doesn't post, so why should I? Answer: I want my forum to be an interesting and safe place for notaries to network, share ideas and innovations, and post information that can aid and protect notaries from predatory signing companies. I try to post interesting discussion topics. I personally am not interested in particular signing companies, although I understand that is critical information for the notaries. I am interested in creating interesting dialogues where we can explore ideas. I want a forum where everyone feels safe and encouraged to contribute instead of only hearing from those two dozen who dominate the turf.
Who is reading? Many Title companies read our forum. One Settlement agent I know has specifically told me that the Title company client she has specifically told her "DON'T USE" notaries who engage in negative conversation on any of the various notary forums - no matter what. They basically black-list you if you are always negative. So, be careful what you say, because the ears of people who have money to spend on you are listening. My ears don't matter because I don't hire you, and the other notary's ears matter only a little bit. But, if you are going to lose out on the best clients because you have a big mouth, that is just suicide!!! Additionally, a silent majority of notaries reads forums. They read, but don't post. Just because they don't say anything doesn't mean they don't think anything.
Here is a quote from a Settlement Agent It is soooo funny the one's who are constantly negative about EVERYTHING are the ones that some title companies have asked me not to use anymore. LOL!
The moral of the story is: Mind the mouth, fatten the wallet!
Successful notaries A majority of the notaries on forums do not have enough work which leaves them ample time to post a lot on various forums, start dramas, complain, or post interesting content. There is nothing wrong with this. But, keep in mind that notaries who are getting a lot of work do not have time to visit various social media venues much if at all. They are too busy for all of this even if they love it.
How do we mold this forum? We all have different wants. I want a forum where notaries can share valuable information about signing companies and signing techniques, and where we can have interesting discussions in an accepting and hospitable atmosphere. What do you want? |
