I suggest you read the CA Notary Handbook very carefully in regards to Powers of Attorney.
In a nut shell, there is no reason a notary cannot notarize the signatures on a Power of Attorney, or any other document. A CA Notary is authorized to make certified copies of a Power of Attorney.
Note that a notary does not notarize a document. Signatures are notarized. So, if a document has an original signature, then that signature can be notarized, following established procedures as outlined in your handbook. Sometimes, it means that a copy of some signed document is presented to you for notarization. You cannot notarize the copy of the signature. However, if the original signer signs the 'copy' again, then you can notarize that original signature. That being said, I don't think that's what you are really asking. As I said, you can notarize the signature on any document as long as that signature is an original (sometimes referred to as a wet signature). Also, a CA notary can certify copies of Powers of Attorney, following the procedure as stated in your handbook. (See page 15 for an example of the notarial certificate used when a certified copy is made.)

It is my understanding that we can not notarize copies of power of attorney in CA. We must notarize the original power of attorney. I need help on this when I get calls regarding power of attorney documents. |
