If you have a website, it is highly recommended that you link to other websites. But, who do you link to, and from what page in your site? Many sites have a links page. Links pages are good, but you can get a better reciprocal link if you link from your home page. But, who is worthy of a link from your home page? There are two major factors:
Keywords and traffic.
If you exchange links with a tiny site that gets only a handful of clicks per day -- if that, an incoming link from them will not mean much. On the other hand, if they have keywords that are similar to your main keywords, it suddenly becomes a lot more valuable.
If your site is a notary site in Fresno, CA, then your keywords would be notary, notary public, mobile notary, california notary, fresno notary, notary fresno, fresno mobile notary, etc. Any notary site will have generic notary keywords with some frequency, but if one has your city and state terms, then their keywords are specialized and optimal for linking to your site. To survive in the web business, you have to understand the science of links. No two links are equally potent, so learn how to identify the good ones.
