Try signing up with Nation's Direct. They pay VERY low but from what I hear, at least they pay and you could get some experience in signing loans. Once you get the hang of it, raise your fee and you can work for better-paying companies.

Always check out a company's payment reputation ASAP after accepting a job. 123Notary and NotaryRotary are the best websites to do this. If you find that the company has a poor payment rep, turn the job back to them ASAP. Do not get sucked into "giving them a chance" or "we had an issue a while back but we are all caught up now" or whatever lame excuse the company gives you.

Well, I think your moral issues are right on cue.

This is exactly how the likes of SOX stay in business, year after year after year. You'll chalk it up, as will thousands of other newbies every year. You'll either stop feeding them, or you'll move on to another means of extra money - as will thousands of others. Then, along will come another thousand to step into your spot.

It might not FEEL like a direct hit, to you - but to the industry as a whole, it's like a cancer. It allows huge companies to do massive volumes of work (at little and sometimes NO cost) that would otherwise go to people who actually do this for a living.

I just got done reading all the horrible stories about SOX. I'm afraid I'm about to be one of their latest victims. I'm a new signing agent and as I'm sure you know, it's hard to get established with no experience. I was thrilled when SOX contacted me with a signing. I did find it strange that they didn't ask me any questions. They got my number from the NNA's website, which makes sense now that I know they target newbies. However, I really need the experience. I have a full time job so this is a side gig to make extra money. If I have to do some jobs for nothing, it seems worth it. Except for the part about allowing this company to continue praying on notaries. I'm having some moral issues with that. But... what's a newbie to do???
