LogMeIn is a subset of the full Remotely Anywhere product. Their security statement:

All traffic between the host and the remote computer is encrypted using industry-strength 128- to 256-bit cyphers, protecting your passwords and data.

If you don't qualify for Social Security checks - you'r a kid to me.

LOVE W/7! I'm hugely impressed with it. I've never used the built-in remote software, but I do use LogMeIn. I've never ventured so far as to remote in from my phone, though - is that secure? I worry more now about phone/data transfer than I do my pc, but that might be pretty typical of a person known to others as "Gramma"

That is a great resource Renee. I also like to lookup the same item in amazon.com as they often have many user reviews.

I noticed you mentioned "remote in" - I use (have used literally for decades) "Remotely Anywhere" - for remote control of my home pc. I can even control it from the browser in my cell phone. It's often proved useful to start lengthy (2 copies) edoc print jobs (of course the laserjet's dual bins need to be full) - when on the way home to pickup the printouts. Just another tool - we both seem to have accumulated many! BTW: home pc has win7 with a built in "remote in" function that I find nowhere as useful as the product mentioned.

Good advice, Ken! I feel so fortunate to have a techie in the family, because it would be VERY difficult to know who/what to trust.

I do also trust & use CNET dot com for reviews on all things technological or electronic.

I use ESET SmartSecurity, for which I pay annually per computer. Definitely makes security a 'no-brainer', and considering what things cross my bandwidth - I have NO problem paying for that. For that reason alone, I'd never allow anyone to remote-in unless I trusted them enough to already have 'given' them my only daughter.

You did a VERY dangerous thing. Assuming you did not "know" the website - allowing a downloaded program to "take control" of your PC puts your machine at grave risk. There are rogue sites that offer to "scan" for free and either install their own virus programs or "fake finding" problems to sell you solutions. Spend the money for a name brand anti virus. McAfee, Norton, etc. I worked 25 years managing mainframes and PC networks. The MOST dangerous thing you can do is to download a program from the internet and allow it to run. I have to assume you are running a windows operating system and your ID has "administrator" authority. It is exactly for this reason that most corporations down level the typical authority - so that when the typical user runs an unauthorized program the "rights" in effect will not allow that program to do whatever it pleases.

In your case the "advise" was correct. The two easiest ways to increase a typical PC's speed are defragmenting the hard drive and adding additional memory. If the disk is full - using NTFS compression can free up a large amount of space, but accessing the files will require a bit more CPU usage to uncompress on the fly.

A downloaded program, running with the typical home users "admin" access rights can do anything from wiping the hard drive to installing a robot that sends emails with your various passwords and credit card numbers to a cyber thief.

I strongly advise obtaining both anti spyware and anti virus software from a reputable vendor (it will NOT be free) and doing a total scan of your PC. Note: be sure to enable for both types of programs the "auto update" function - without frequent updates these types of programs provide a false sense of security - as there are new threats developed daily! You must keep these "shields" up to date at all times

My lap top was running so slow that opening a simple web page took a minute or two. I regularly defrag and started to think I needed to buy a new laptop. That's not an option right now so I found a web site that will scan the memory already installed on your computer and will give you an upgrade option that is suitable. http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/index.aspx . I took the test and printed out the info and drove to Fry's Electronics bought the memory ( only $12.00 ). I got home flipped over the laptop and installed the memory. This was my first time messing with a laptop. I also had the option of purchasing the memory online. When I open a web page now I click it and "bam" like Emiril LOL. I can not believe what $12.00 did for me!
