Thanks for the info. As far as getting 2 signings per day, In the past two weeks I have had to turn down at least 20 jobs due to them being so close. I was hoping there would be some in the morning or mid afternoon. I guess time will tell. Next, I must say that there are notaries out there who accept the 45.00 fee I spoke of because I was told there are around 6 in my area that are called first because of this fee. I'm in the middle since I was also told there are some who charge 150 and above. I also want to clarify regarding the notarization process. I do stamp and sign at the actual closing so don't let it bother you. P.S. Can you recommend any title or signing companies to me that may call on a regular basis and that actually pay? One thing I've found out is that it's very difficult to get another notary to help with this question. Why is that? |

Even after 10 years doing this, I still plan on 3 hours per signing. There's an hour (or so) in preparation, both pre-signing and post-signing. An hour (or so) travel time, and I always plan for at least an hour at the table with a standard refi and two signers.
I don't do ServiceLink signings for two reasons: (1) they usually are below what my fees are and (2) fax backs take time and effort and unless they pay for it, it won't get done.
I don't doubt that there are those who will do a signing for $45+20, but most of the full-time, seasoned professionals do not. Those fees typically will not cover expenses, much less making any money.
Getting two a day is wishful thinking, in today's market climate. Three or four years ago, two a day would be a minimum. But those days are long gone and probably will never return.
When taking orders for e-docs, you need to set a "drop dead" time to receive them. Typically, I require docs to be in my hands 3 hours prior to the scheduled appointment. If they're not ready then, the appointment may get rescheduled to after any other appointments that I have. Don't make other borrowers pay for the mistakes or poor planning of a lender or title company they have nothing to do with.
One thing you said really bothers me, "... going to the job, driving home, notarizing docs, ..." In my opinion, you should notarize the signatures at the table. In some states, you must complete the notarization in front of the signers. After going through the documents with the signers, while still at the table, you need to go through them again checking to be sure you haven't missed any signatures or notarizations.

Hi, I have recently become a certified notary agent and have completed 9 signings so far. I have been dealing with servicelink for the most part mainly because they are the only ones who call. My first question, (I'm in N.J.) is who besides servicelink would you recommend? I have sent out numerous emails and made tons of calls but to no avail. I've signed up with LSI but have not received one call. I get calls from servicelink all of the time, but they are usually at night and close in time to what I have already scheduled. Being new, I take a fair amount of time to prepare as well as the time it takes to fax back (countrywide) documents. From start to finish it takes me around 2 hours or more per signing. This includes printing, adding sign tags, going to the job, driving home, notarizing docs, faxing, then putting the docs back in order. I hear how some notaries can do 6 per day. Not that I doubt it, but most of the time the docs arrive just in time and for the life of me can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I was also told that my fee of 75.00 plus 25.00 for docs, was mid range since there are notaries out there who will do it for 45.00 plus 20.00 for docs. How can all of this work be worth only 65.00? If you are trying to make a decent living out of this profession, how can it be done on 65.00? I'm hoping to do two a day and would be thrilled if this happens. That amounts to 1000.00 per week which would be plenty for me. The problem is getting early jobs which seem hard to come by. I guess I'm asking, is it possible to make 1000.00 per week, and who else would you recommend I get involved with because although servicelink has been great, I'm sure there will be a point when they slow down. Please help. |
