I'm like the two of you. I prefer being prepared at all times. I too have a portable HP Officejet (color) that I use for loan closings when the Borrower's weren't able to make copies of their ID; and for my general notary work. In addition, I recently purchased a $70 Brother Laser Printer that I keep in the car for busy EOM periods. You know when you don't have time to go home and print docs.

I thought the same thing as you, Linda....what medical office doesn't have a copier? A copier to a medical office is like oxygen to a human....an absolute necessity. Maybe the office was just getting set up...or something. I didn't even ask...the focus of the conversation with the scheduler seemed to be on a Notary taking a portable copier to the location. Oh, well, I'm ready for next time and I got a nice new copier on the cheap!

I've had a small HP for quite a while and despite many people saying "it's the borrowers' job to do the copies, not yours" I've never regretted the investment and I've more than gotten my money back. I feel it's a "value-added" service I can offer...

I'm curious though, Lisa...you said, in part "...needed a notary to go to a medical office and copy certain papers, notarize signatures and ship docs back to them. They asked me if I had a portable copier"

The company didn't realize that the medical office should have a copier you could use??? This assignment was very do-able for you - too bad the company didn't realize that. As valuable as my lil HP is I'm tickled when borrowers tell me they have a copier in their house - one less item to drag along.

Anyway, guess it all happened for the best - at least you got your portable copier now...and you'll be glad you did!!

A couple of times, borrower(s) did not have copies of ID's or requested paperwork to send back with docs so, typically, I would give borrower(s) the TC or entity's fax number and advise them to fax the requested copies the next day. Well, last week a company called and needed a notary to go to a medical office and copy certain papers, notarize signatures and ship docs back to them. They asked me if I had a portable copier and I said, no, but I can receive faxes and edocs as I have been emailed medical docs with sensative info before. They said that wouldn't work, I would need to take a portable copier. They thanked me "anyway" and hung up.

The loss of that job, plus the previous borrower(s) that didn't provide the copies they were told to have sort of got me to thinking.....maybe I should invest in a portable copier. So I did some research online and saw a Canon portable copier - even had a carrying handle - but it was $130. I drove to a few store and found the Lexmark X5410 color printer/copier/scanner for $39.99. It's inkjet and makes excellent copies. Only need the copier part, don't need the rest of it and it's portable in that it's lightweight and the price was right so I bought it. I already have two laser printers.

The best part is that it works with my 400 watt, 3.48amp inverter so I can just copy out of the back of my car. It's light enough to carry into a facility if need be. I bought a shallow, plaster tub for it. Now, I can copy ID's or copy docs if I get a call for such an assignment.
