It is the fear of the unknown. :)
This is why I created the Loan Signing Video.
It is a*****of a loan signing as if I'm sitting with the borrower.
It is a close up of the individual documents also in succession as they are reviewed with the borrower.

So many notaries were looking for someone to do a ride-along to no avail so I created the next best thing or maybe better since you can replay it. :) I consider it your own personal ride-along.

My first one was given to me by a friend of mine ten years ago. I had no idea about what I was getting myself into. I knew nothing about the documentation at the time, nor did I even know that a signing industry exixted and was about to explode. I went in completely dumb.

Once I saw the paperwork (which was much less back then), I was able to relax a little. I was familiar with some real estate documents. All I knew was to look for signatures and notarial spots and don't miss any. It took me roughly one hour to get through the signing. After that, signings came much easier for me. I never did understand what I was all nerved up about. As Carmen stated now "I can do these in my sleep."

Ain't that the truth Laser Lady! I remember that it took me 3 months to actually do my first closing. I had cold feet. I was also terrified. I remember thinking why in the world did I say yes, you're still not ready. The night before that big day I didn't sleep a wink. That day however everything went smooth to my surprize. I had worked myself into a frenzy for absolutely nothing. For the first year I was always a little nervous. Now 5 years later, I could do these in my sleep!

Good Luck!

Happy Holidays to all!!

I remember my first signing. It was for Nation's Direct in 1998. I had no idea what I was doing. I was completely baffled and lost. I had to have one of their reps coach me through the whole signing. I think it was in Covina but I really can't remember that long ago. At that time I had never taken a loan signing course as it was all so new to me. I had been doing notaries for Nation's Direct for several months but that was the first time I had to do the actual signing. But the results were good. Everybody signed in the right places and everybody was happy.

Thanks. This is what I understood, but the person "training" me disagreed. I also read the posts under:open forum for venting/id problems with ladies" and realize I'm not the only one with concerns. Your answer helped a lot. I had completely read the NNA book of Florida statues four times and didn't see that answer there at all.

flwebsurfer - I'm assuming you are in Florida. Fortunately for you, the Florida notary statutes are extremely concise and if you read them, you will find your answer.

Please advise. If you have a signer Drivers ID with the name Jane Thomas Smith, but loan docs with the name Jane Sue Smith, how do you determine idenity? To further complicate matters, SS card says Jane Susie Smith, birth cert says Jane Sue Thomas.

Also, second question, assuming that the DL says Lizzy J Fox, then if the docs say Lizzy Jane Fox, is that ok?

Getting very confused here.

I have heard my notaries describe their first signing as being on egg shells. I still remember my first one many years ago. You do not know what to expect when you arrive. Are the borrowers going to be cooperative or unruly? Yes, borrowers come in all kinds of emotions.

Knowing your paperwork is the best advice you can get. As Therron stated, go through your documents if you get them early enough and know them well. Prepare them before you go to the signing. Mark all your signature lines with a sticky so you will not miss one. NO HIGHLIGHTING!!!!!!!

If the borrower has a question you cannot answer, have them contact their lender. If the signing takes place when the lender is unavailable and you still have questions, email me and I will give you my cell phone number so you can call me for an answer.

I bought several jurat forms prior to the newly revised ones. What works easiest for you; drawing a line through the old wording or simply purchasing new forms I really hate throwing away money and feel that the companies should replace them free of change if we aren't able to use the old ones.

No, documents to be need to be notarized are all clearly indicated with a place for your notary stamp and signature. Make sure on jurats that you have them swear or affirm before you notarize that paper.

Thank you so much. You are so right, when you make mistakes, you have to admit it, correct them and move on. Do you ever come across documents that you are not able to determine if they are to be notarized

Now I just mark items that require "special attention" like when they need a second ID or they have to fill in some info. Bottom line is to take your time - that is the best way to make sure you don't miss anything. And if you do, just go back and fix it - admit you missed it and apolgize and fix it. Hope this helps!

I've gotten certified and have done a lot of reading and research to familiarize myself with the process as well as somd of the various loan docs that I may come across. But I'm totally a nervous wreck! How bad is the first go round? Does anyone have any suggestions
