I love the gel pens and so did the borrowers. Needless to say, they are expensive and when you see what people do with them on occassion (stick them in their mouths, ears and sometimes nose) , it can get rather costly. After years of using gel pens, I went back to bic pens because they are cheaper by the dozen and they also leave an impression in the paper when a borrower signs their name which shows that the document is an original.

What kind do you use? I use the Pilot gel pens. My clients love these. I too run out quick.

I've a bit of OCD about my pens. I carry the same brand and have to reload my bag about every six weeks. The pens I carry write wonderfully and I am constantly asked by the borrower if they can keep them. Sometimes, they just swipe them. I look at it as a cost of doing business.....maybe I should buy stock....hmmmmmm.

I always keep a full supply of blue and black pens. Some of the lenders request signings in blue, some in black. If they don't specifically state to sign in blue, I always have the borrowers sign in black. If you have a chance to review the documents before the signing, you will sometimes see in the Escrow Instructions if there is a requirement for blue or black ink. Don't forget that you can deduct the cost of your pens as a business expense on your income taxes.

Always bring plenty of pens. In my state, black in mandatory, so I do not bring blue pens. If one is present at the signing table, I politely remove it to a different location away from the table.

Just a note of caution. Pay attention to what the borrower does to your pen. I have seen people put them in the mouth, ears, and believe it or not their nose. When that happens, I leave it behind with the borrower.

If for whatever reason, I do end up taking the pen back with me, it is completely disinfected with instant hand antiseptic. Just think of all the epethelials (dna) you get to bring back with you.

I purchase pens by the 1000 from National Pen. I purchase both black and blue. I put about 15 at a time of each in my briefcase. I give these to the clients to sign. If I don't get them back, that is just fine, because they have my name and phone number. I've received many additional notary jobs from people who have called because they had my pen.

I became a notary in April and I always carry several pens. The least amount I would carry is 3, ( one for each borrower, and one for me). I always keep at least 3 blue and 3 black pens in my breifcase. Some docs request blue while some request black. If not request made I usually use blue. I try to use the same type of pen so I must carry my own. I had one closing where the wife could use only one kind of pen because of the way she writes and she has a medical condition. I was a little skeptical because I read somewhere that you should use the same kind of pen. It was a noticeable difference but I let her use her own anyway, which was after I noticed she was signing with it. I informed the lenders and they said it was okay as long as the ink color was the same.

My favorite subject. You gotta love it when you call to confirm a closing and the borrower asks, "how long is this going to take" you respond with the typical answer, that you will get them in and out as quickly as possible, then.....you get to the closing and there are 2 people and only 1 pen! And so you sit there, as they take turns signing docs, passing the pen back and forth....taking twice as long as it normally would!

You would not believe how many pens I bring to closings now! =)
