I like the briefcase. When I go to India for web design, I need a briefcase that holds my water, pens, everything all organized. I am an organization freak. Maybe I'll get one of those bags. Oh, and it can hold my phrase book for rickshaw rides too. I need phrases like, "Please drive on the left side of the road, we're not in America", "Please don't have a head on collision with that truck so early in the morning", "No, its not okay if you bring your wife with us", "I won't pay extra unless you use the meter in which case I would tip you becuase I would know I wasn't being charged double".

As in every field of endeavor, there are BOZOs and Professionals. This post will deal with your "notary kit". Are you prepared to do your job? My "kit" is HEAVY - fortuately my spouse drives me to most of the assignments. I carry a LOT of forms. Certification of copy, Acknowledgement, Affidavit, etc. In addition I "plan to forget" - in the kit is a spare set of reading glasses. I also carry a small digital camera for the clients who "forgot" to make a copy of their ID, lots better than waiting for them to find a copy shop! Also in the kit are MULTIPLE stamps (big and small) and TWO embossers - one for the "correct" left edge insertion, but also one for bottom insertion. For quick deployment "some" of my forms have my stamp and seal (but of course are NOT signed). I have LOTS of black and blue pens - my choice is "Precise V5" - often complimented because of its ultra fine line - helping to make the sigs more legible. I have the librarians "Sort Quick" waxy finger rub for paper handling - so much better than the disgusting licking of fingers. My ancient "Tot 50" stapler for ATTACHING "loose acks" gets constant use. A small scotch tape dispenser for those little tears gets a bit of use. For shipping a good supply of Fedex/UPS/DHL labels are carried - in the car are the letter and legal and "floppy" bags. My shipping container of choice is the FedEx "Sturdy Pak" - very protective of the docs ! There is NO White-Out in my "kit". We all know to have the signator draw a single line thru (leaving legible) and initial mistakes. A bunch of my business cards (held with a mediumn size "clippie" for when I forget to carry some - is always in the kit. All of this is in my:

Please see the "Ken's briefcase link" post to see the link in one piece because it is such a long link it causes a technical glitch. The link has been cut into two for technical reasons. You can paste it together in an address bar.

a super bag - especially for the drop front compartment that provides quick access for the most commonly used items. It gives a professional and organized impression - and that gets REPEAT calls!

One pet peeve: cheepskate notaries who razor blade off the last digits of their expiration date and (when they remember) write it in - how absurd!! After years of use a new SET (large and small) of stamps are a minor expense - by the way - do YOU clean your stamp ever couple of months? It's easy with some GOJO hand cleaner and an old toothbrush - makes that grungy stamp's impression almost new again.

Of course there is LOTS more to being a professional and not a BOZO. Personal appearance, work ethics, attention to detail, learning to really LISTEN to your client, etc. But this post is just about the kit, the supplies you walk in with so you have the right tools to augment your skill and training. If you don't know an acknowledgement from a affidavit - all the supplies in the world wont really matter.
