We have been sending out various email quizzes to the Notaries. Our Notaries often object when I catch them off guard by phone asking them trick questions such as, "What is the difference between an Acknowledgment and a Jurat." My interpretation is that this is your job, so you should know it cold even if you are off guard, drunk, or sleeping. So, as of 2019 we started to quiz by email.

We have one version that is three questions, another that is five and one with ten hard questions. I find that asking five is the magic number. It is more thorough than three, but not overwhelming like ten. Roughly 25% of our Notaries are willing to respond to the five question quiz, and if I email them a second time I get another 20% or so.

Those who take the trouble to respond to this tend to be very much more likely to get positive reviews. Those with bad reviews typically ignore my emails. Interesting fact. Additionally, those who do well on our quiz tend to get more clicks, a higher quantity of reviews, and more jobs from their listing even though we don't broadcast quiz results which is also very interesting and meaningful.

So, the bottom line behind our quizzing is that it takes a lot of work on my part grading thousands of quizzes. But, it helps identify who will do well on our directory on the long run without having to wait for several years to find out. So, if we send a quiz email, it only takes two minutes and we take it very seriously. Thanks.
