In addition to what I said earlier, our 'important' role as a Notary Public Signing Agent is constantly emphasized and discussed as a major measure against frauds. We have to be scrutinized by all in the chain all the time, we are background screened, photographed and fingerprinted every year at our expense, have continuing education, have to be privacy trained and compliant. In spite of all this, it is somehow to be construed that our fees are so exorbitant that we have to build in discounts while we are still the lowest paid fee in the chain.
Appraisals have gone up uniformly among all of them and the list of appraisers is very small especially compared to that of notaries which is in the thousands.
I tried to become an appraiser, passed the courses etc, but couldn't find one to do 1,000 hours of apprenticeship with. They don't take on anyone else unless you are a family member, spouse, friend etc. They have it sewed up.
Notary Signing Agent fees will never go up unless we operate similarly. New Notaries are cracked out daily. Someone has given them the idea that this is a work from home/get rich quick scheme.
Most burn out or figure out that the market is over-saturated with notaries and even experienced ones leave.
Really, in order for Signing Agents to command the fees we deserve, it should be (I am going to be real unpopular now) only open to those who have experience in the banking, title, lending, or real estate fields or grandfathered in if you have done over 1,000 signings, and/or who mentor or apprentice with an experienced notary for 1,000 hours.
The way it is now, most who try and do signing agent work seem to have NO business experience. Why else do we get lots of fine print pages with orders on how to dress, how to behave, what to say and not to say, cover up all your neck and hand tattoos, and much demeaning, degrading crap. I understand how companies are disgusted with some of the people they are trying to hire- they are actually doing business training classes 101, and it is clearly reflected in the pay they offer. Only experienced and professional agents will be able to be paid the correct fees and in advance on Pay Pal.

In an ideal world, from the inception of Signing Agent, it should have been based on the signature fees as set by the State plus all other services itemized (printing, travel, faxing etc).
I am only talking about California here. If our fees do go to $15. a signature, that's what should be paid, plus travel fee and printing and faxing back. Why do we have to give a discount? We are clearly the lowest paid, most marginalized person in the loan closing process and at the same time, NO loan will close without us. We are necessary. I wish the Sec of State would also mandate that that maximum fee is also the minimum fee. Why do we have to lower our fees at all?! Even in a bad economy, do other related to this industry ( appraisers, pest inspectors, title co's, signing co's) lower their fees? NO. NEVER. They just screw the notaries.
Does anyone out there think that just because our fee goes to $15. that anyone in this industry will recognize that and be expecting to pay us any more? No mention will ever be made of a fee increase, believe me. It us up to US to demand more, or just not work until it happens. That will never happen either. You know, being a Notary Public is not a 'vocation' like a priest or a nun, or some retirement hobby, it is a JOB.

I just read that assembly bill 2217 will increase California basic minimum Notary fees to $15. Is this correct?

Personally, I feel that Notaries should be able to charge around $15 per signature for the first TWO signatures, and then offer a lower rate for additionals. After you are there at the appointment, have ID's, have the journal open and filled out and are done with small talk, it is smooth sailing -- usually.

What do you guys think?
