First off - I don't use drop boxes - I always use a manned facility where I can get a receipt. I have personally seen a truck drive right by the box and not pick it up; have also been told stories by consumers around my area about certain drop boxes where it either wasn't hit or what was dropped went missing. So, no drop boxes for me.

Now, to address the scenario - what I would do ...

If the signing was so late that I missed the pickup - I would not take it upon myself to go to an alternate carrier as the companies have contracts with certain couriers for discounted rates - SUBSTANTIAL discounts - and they probably won't agree to reimburse anything over and above what they expected to pay.

First, I would contact the company and advise them what happened; then I'd take the package home, scan it back to them, then first thing next business day take it to the manned facility for shipping.

Unfortunately, I have to say no, I would not go out of pocket for this service without promise of full reimbursement. Most companies would probably have no problem with the reimbursement.

As Notaries, we are not in the favor business or the shipping business. It is nearly impossible to get reimbursed if you pay for shipping. However, what if your local UPS drop box has already been picked up, and the only other alternative without driving an hour is your local staffed FedEx station?

How far would you go to make sure that time sensitive critical loan got shipped out on time? Is it OPP (other people's problem) or would you be better off to take the initiative and enhance the relationship with your client?

Hmm.
