One of the good reasons to always speak to the borrower to confirm an appointment is to ask what ID will be presented - AND EXACTLY WHAT NAME IS ON THAT ID. Many borrowers will NOT look at the ID but will reply from "memory". Also ask the expiration date and the serial number of the ID which forces them to pull it out and look at it. ASK if there is a "suffix" (Jr. III, etc.). If I am not permitted to do my due diligence in confirming the ID, it's PayPal up front and the risk of being unable to legally notarize is on THEIR shoulders. Now that you know the EXACT name (and get the spelling too), compare it to the docs PRIOR to printing. If there is a problem pass it up the chain of command.

Seems to me that on the very few that I've had an ID problem, it's the signing services that have a fit. Title companies...no.
Too bad, properly IDing people is what notaries do and what we're there for...even if they don't like it.

If you don't value your time and experience, nobody else will.

Does the notary get in trouble with the signing company if the borrower has no ID? Whose responsibility is it anyway? Should the notary be blamed for failing to complete the signing if he/she/it is legally prohibited from doing so? What is your experience?
