In Ca we were required to keep them until we gave up our notary commission then turn them over to the SOS. In NC we don't have to keep a journal, I do, and when I retire I will turn all of them over to the SoS to handle any claims after I leave the country.

Journals and the way they are completed and/or retained is a state-specific law. Some states don't even require a journal; tho' even most of those 'highly recommend' keeping one.

If you don't value your time and experience, nobody else will.

In my opinion the notary should keep the journal until the end of their term and then hand it over to the county clerk. I'm not sure what other states think about this. But, what if there is fraud and there is a query, and you no longer have your journal? You have failed the public in such a case. Treat your journals as they are evidence that could nail a fraud. Keep forever or until you hand it over to the authorities!

One notary wants a journal entry in FL to be able to record multiple documents. This is a problem. Each document name needs to be clearly stated as well as the document date, plus one signature for each journal entry. Multiple documents per entry will cause a lot of trouble. There is a reason why journals have 512 entries! You need them all.
