Before I go to any appointment. I go through the docs and make sure that the notarial verbiage is correct, if not I either stamp the docs with correct wording or I attach a correct Jurat or Acknowledgement, then I filled out the venue, the date, my name and the borrower's name etc. I don't sign it or stamp my seal on it until I'm at the table. Most of the time when the borrowers are reviewing their docs. I'm able to complete my part.

When I do signings, I have them sign the non-notarized documents first, then the notarized documents. I give them their set of documents to "look over" and use that time to complete the certificates. This way they are occupied with a useful task and I can focus on quickly completing the certificates AT the signing.

According to the training materials when I was commissioned, it is illegal to not complete the notary act "at the time of notarization"

I have personally witnessed at least two notaries just do journal entries and walk out the door without doing the loose certificates. My guess is they are trying to be "efficient" at the cost of possibly losing their commission since they figure they will be in possession of the documents until they drop them to FedEx or whoever.

How many of you complete your Acknowledgments and Jurats after the signing? I am reading that current California notary law requires the notary to complete the certificate at the time of the signing. Any thoughts?
