So the Postal Service wants to have its employees act as notaries. Fine. In NC, each employee would be REQUIRED to take a 6 hour course (currently around $75), buy a Guidebook around $30), submit application to NC SOS ($50), take an oath at Register of Deeds ($10) and buy a seal (around $25) before being able to notarize. That's at least $190 PER EMPLOYEE. And then they may charge only $5 per signature. Real cost savings move? Doesn't seem so to me.

Found on Internet when I searched "post office on federal land".

I believe the USPS is federal property similar to an embassy being considered foreign land of the embassy's home country. Any crime committed on its property is a federal crime. While local law enforcement can make arrests and control problems, its really a federal area.

IF (and it's a big IF) that is true, I wonder what the Venue on a notarization would be? If it's something "funky" what if I do a notarization at the local Post Office?

At a more down to earth level: Suppose I notarize while at a Foreign Consulate - Brazil (eg: Technically Brazil soil) - am I "out of bounds"?

Amazing that our government can give billions of dollars to the automakers to bail them out but can't do anything to help the postal service.

And no, the postal service gets NO government funding - it's all privately funded. Been around for how many years and our government won't help?

Pathetic.

If nothing is done and those Saturday deliveries are stopped you're looking at doubling the unemployment rate in this country.

This bill proposed by Senator Al Franken will likely go through because it hopes to avoid the Saturday postal worker stoppage.

"If a group of Senators get their way, visitors to U.S. Post Offices may be able to get documents notarized and pick up a fishing license in addition to mailing packages and buying stamps.

Senator Al Franken and seven other colleagues have proposed the new legislation to help the ailing agency, which is currently losing up to $25 million a day. In addition to Notary services and the sale of hunting and fishing licenses, the plan would permit the USPS to ship wine and beer, products that cannot legally be sent through the mail under current regulations.

A number of cuts have already been announced in efforts to save the postal service. However, if it is passed, the Franken bill could increase revenues and possibly prevent the termination of Saturday mail delivery now due to start in August. The bill would also reinstate overnight delivery standards to speed up mail distribution, and it includes suggestions for helping customers better utilize postal Internet services.

Several other options to aid the financially-strapped agency have been proposed, and it’s now up to Congress to negotiate a final plan that is acceptable to both houses."

They're set on taking from our business models to increase revenue for the post office. This will likely be the final straw for those notaries struggling to survive in a bad economy. The U.S. Federal govt is set to co-opt everything operating independently of itself.

Sincerely yours,

Notary's Life
