Ditto Renee...and I pick up labels from the latest pickup time dropboxes on 'lawyers row', too. Only problem I've ever had was when I got a receipt from a Mailbox, etc.-type location. Yes, I was 'covered', but the docs didn't get there for 2 days.

If you don't value your time and experience, nobody else will.

No matter the issue, policy or happenstance, I try to email the tracking number to the scheduler right away. Those little pieces of paper can be easily lost. I have my copy of the email.

I ALWAYS drop @ Fed-Ex or UPS, and get a reciept. I staple the reciept to the confirmation and file it. One time, back when you had to fill out the form @ Fed-Ex if you did'nt have a label and the co. just gave you an acct. number, I had my acct. charged by mistake! ($60.00) Fed-Ex said "oh, the carbon must have slipped when you marked bill to recipient"! Yeah, right. At any rate, since I had the reciept they reversed the charge to the signing co. and took it off my acct. Plus I had a signing co. call me one day and asked if I had dropped the pack. I gave them the tracking #, end of discussion. If I had'nt been able to provide that...who knows? I think it showed up later, but still.

1) I never use a drop box when it comes to FedEx or UPS.
2) I always ask for a drop off receipt.
3) I keep said receipt until I receive payment.

I have never had to dispute any payment for a signing that was lost during shipping as a result of following these three simple steps.

In regards to USPS, if I must/chose to use them, I always send certified mail.

In regards to shipping companies such as OnTrac or GSO who only have drop boxes, if I can't get the company to use another shipper I will drop off the documents ONLY after taking a picture of me physically dropping the documents into the drop box. And even that makes me feel uneasy until payment is received.

Since I started as an NSA in '05, I have never obtained a shipping receipt, I almost always use a drop box, have had/use an online account w/FedEx & UPS to create labels (unless one is provided), and have only once had a problem.

Back more than a few years ago, I was charged back (can't remember which shipper) for a shipment to a title agent that closed their doors the DAY I did the closing.

For all the convenience of the online accounts and the drop boxes, having to eat the cost of one shipment (that was before both shippers began instant account validations) was, for me, a price worth paying.

It may well be a 'location' thing - I usually use the same drop boxes since I have late pick-up for both near my house, and those boxes are in an area where a lot of commerce flows. That would mean a LOT of companies are relying on the service to those boxes, and that could certainly influence the person whose job is to provide that service.

I also NEVER bring a completed pkg home - it is shipped same-day, unless some circumstance dictates otherwise (client chooses fax-backs OVER same-day shipping, for example, which almost never happens).

Always go to FedEx or UPS; never use a dropbox.
Always keep your receipt until the file pays you.
Always ship ASAP so that there can be no delay attributed to you.

I got into the habit of attaching my shipping receipts to my signing requests so they are always available, for lookup when things get missed

Do you hold on to the Fedex until you hear from the lender if there is a problem with a document?

Many notaries feel that if there is a problem with even a single non-notarized document, that they should delay sending back the fedex until they hear from the lender. The drawback is that if they wait until the next morning to talk to the lender, what makes them think that the borrower will have time to see them again that day? Borrowers go to work and can't skip work just to deal with a single document. The lender might be out that day. What if the notary is busy with other appointments and misses the Fedex cut off for that day and the Fedex gets to Title LATE and the borrower loses their lock? It is not worth it to hold on to a Fedex. Let the lender deal with it. The problem of the single unsigned document is OUT OF YOUR HANDS the minute the fedex is in the drop box.

Don't make other people's problems become YOUR problems. Put the fedex in the drop box and let it go!
