OMG! so much stress for... nothing.
I can't imagine being in such a situation, though i have concerns sometimes when i have evening signings.
I've refused a couple of signings after finding out that i would have to drive to a bad neighborhood at night in San Francisco.

Payment question always comes up at the signing table. Most of the borrowers are not happy and don't quite understand why there is a "middle man" Well, as a Notary I don't like it either that part of my fee of $175 or $200 is taken by the signing company.....

Great story, but 5 signings in one day?!? Ah youth. While I may be 55 yrs young, I can only handle three a day. After that my brain gets weary and my skills diminish. Do it while you can. BTW, I would have walked out at the point of being called an asshole. Ever hear of the term "hostile workplace environment"?

Wow... that guy having been in Real Estate for so long is probably totally stessed out and therefore psycho!

Prompt, secure professional signings.

The first to call in North Central North Carolina!

I just saw the new order for the re-signing. Location was at the customers home... I feel sorry for the notary going out there

Wow! Glad you're ok! I always leave the address and telephone number of the residence (not the names, for privacy reasons) with my husband or teenage daughter and let them know my schedule. If they don't hear from me in an hour after the appt time, they are to call or text my cell. I've run into some weird situations over the past 10 years of doing signings and you just never know! If I suspect anything creepy I will usually call my husband but tell the borrower that I'm to "check in" with the escrow officer or some other excuse. It's not a guarantee that I won't run into trouble, but I think that it's enough of a deterrent for some of the weirdos. I have considered getting my concealed permit, and after reading your post I think there's no time like the present! Take Care

Wow, Wayne - glad you got out of there. And yeah, he can have the docs!!.. :)

Think title better have the rescheduled signing done at a branch or in a public place, right?

Sounds like you handled it very professionally.

Just another day...

It was 5th and last signing for the day. I was in contact with this customer for over a week due to schedule changes and our conversations were always good. He even asked me to call him once I received the docs to ensure the funds due matched what he was told by the bank.

When I arrived at the location he greeted me, we shook hands and we walked to his kitchen to start the signing. ID's were given to me and I set his package of docs to the side and mentioned that these were his copies.

As I was writing down the info from the ID's he asked if I worked for the title company that was on the docs. I told him I was an independent contracted notary hired to perform work on behalf of the title company. He then proceeded to ask "So how much are you getting paid tonight?" I jokingly said "Oh just a couple dollars, enough for something off the dollar menu." Every other customer I have told this to has always laughed and the question has always ended. Well this guy immediately said "That's the wrong answer!" Since I was writing ID information in my journal I didn't see his facial expressions, I laughed at his response thinking he was joking back with me. Then this guy became extremely vulgar and said "Well I'm not going to sign anything asshole." Shocked, I said "Excuse me?" He then said "I asked you a simple question idiot and I'm entitled to know how much you're being paid." I replied by saying all title and closing charges are listed on the HUD statement." Keep in mind this guy has been a realtor/broken for 23 years, per his 1003.

At this point he started yelling and pacing in and out of the kitchen. His wife who was standing behind me putting dishes away said for him to calm down. At this point I began to feel threatened by his behavior. He then said "I'm not signing a fucking thing tonight. There's the door, get out of my house!" I immediately gathered my book, stamp and other items. Once everything was in my case I asked him for my docs back. He said "You're not getting a damn thing, these are my docs, they have my name on them." I stated to him that I need to have the docs as the signing is not taking place. He then proceeded to jump in front of me and say "You better get out of my house now!" Since he had the docs in his hand, I asked him once more for the docs. At this point he yelled to his wife who was still in the kitchen and said "Call 911, this guy is doing a home invasion robbery in our home." At this point my safety was greatly threatened and I evacuated the residence and called the title company and informed them of the situation.

The title company made notes and will pay me my full fee.

I know the CCW topic has been addressed before... I do have a CCW and carry to all signings and other Notary work for this particular reason. You have NO IDEA who you are dealing with when you enter the residence. It could be a simple loan signing, a POA signing or signing docs for a convicted felon, you never know. At no point did I draw my weapon or indicate that I have one. It's a CCW for a reason.

9 years and I've never had one this bad.

Just another Thursday night for a Notary Public...
