Carmen, Express in PA is a title Co. I think being in CA has a lot to do with it. I am in NY and placed a call to our State Rep. for clarification, etc. and they have not returned my call. I am not going to stress about it. I will comply with the good cos. that require it from me and just move on. I had one done by Fiserv (GAC) and requested that vendor management send me a copy. They replied that they cannot and gave me the company name and number to contact to have another done. Just seems very redundant. I thought I read elsewhere that if a company did one on you they would provide a copy to you. This has not been my experience. But again, I won't have it done through NNA. So I will just deal as it comes. Thanks for your input. Pat |

I have said this often. I will not submit to any more background checks for anyone. Period!!! Unless it becomes federal law, then and only then will I. It has become a way for the NNA and the mortgage industry to try to dictate how to run our business.
I have been working with a company for ten years who now requires background checks. I have not submitted to one. Yet, they still call me to do work for them. Might they be getting the message? Probably not.

I am in Michigan, where each county is left to decide whether or not to perform BGC's prior to commissioning notaries. The state statutes do not require it.
In the last 12 months I've worked for just over 100 different clients, and only one has even mentioned a BGC - that was Stewart Title, and they did it themselves, didn't even suggest that I go through the NNA.
I am no longer a member of the NNA/NSA, and absolutely agree with you, Carmen, about all of this. I politely disagree as far as continueing the dialog, MountainQueen - it is our continued dialog that is KEY to bringing the greater understanding of all the facts, and the exchange of different thoughts and ideas that help us all form our own opinions in the most comprehensive way.
From these exchanges, we have:
1. Clearly and loudly spoken our collective dissent, and at the least we have placed a cog in the wheel of what could have become quite the marketing coup for the NNA.
2. Prevented the NNA BGC 'program' from becoming their means of FORCING industry-wide membership, which in turn would further allow them to present themselves to OUR CLIENTS as THE representative 'voice' of NSA's. Please REMEMBER it was the NNA that represented to OUR CLIENTS as well as our competition that $50 is a "suggested minimum fee"; it was/is the NNA who travels the country flooding the fields with new NSA's who DO work for $50, and THOSE TWO THINGS ALONE have caused the greatest harm to our livelihood. Suffice to say, the NNA does NOT speak with a voice that represents ME!
3. Made it clear to those of our CLIENTS, through these board dialogs, that MANY (if not most?) of us are NOT alligned with the NNA BGC program, but ARE willing to subscribe to other viable options that pose us no consequential threat. |

This is very interesting. It is also odd that some of us have been asked and others have not. I really don't know what to make of it. I get calls every day from new and regulars offering signings and not one of them has mentioned a BC to me. Could it be do to the fact that I am California and we have to have background checks form the Department of Justice in order to be notaries? Or ia just those that have knowledge of the NNA and take this is last word?
Is Express Financial Services a title company?

Carmen, I saw where you posted that no title cos. were asking you for a background check. Express Financial Services out of Pitt., PA whom I have worked for over 2 years (and whom I like working for)states that as of 1/31/07 I must have one done at my expense by a reputable (?)company of my choice. In the past 2 years I have had 2 other good title companies ask for one, both of which did their own. Other companies of late have also asked me but they were ones I did not like or didn't do enough biz with them to warrent one. Just throwing this out there for your comments. |
