Kenneth, I like your style. And your comments are spot on!

I have a "confirmation of the confirmation" email that I send when I'm hired. It indicates MY contract to perform services. By having sent that, if they do not cancel me for the job, they have accepted MY contract, and must live up to it. Frequently we notaries are inundated with rules and expectations, but do not stand up for our own expectations from the hiring party. It is still a 2-way street, and they have obligations to us, too.

Kan, Thanks for the kind words, if you looked like me you would "try harder too"!

With regard to the "conf of the conf" - very interesting concept. I like and fear the idea. I feel it would (in our competitive environment) appear a bit "hostile". It would go to all, but the abusers of notaries are (in my decade+ of experience) in the minority. I fear it would CAUSE a "Sorry, but the bank just cancelled" call.

Regarding "they must live up to it" (and I may be way off base because I have not seen your document) all I can say is that I hope so for your sake. We both know of the games played with many who have to wrestle for their pay. Legal action is NOT an option - as the fees are too small to make the process worthwhile.

Instead of playing 20 questions, all I want to know is where, when & my all-purpose CYA: Anything else I need to know before quoting???
Any time that either the order or the docs come in and are simply not what I was told or assumed to be the case because I wasn't told of any over-the-top stips (I put some of the burden on them--geez, they do this for a living and should know about unusual/abnormal stips), I simply call or e-mail immediately to get the fee increased to what I think is fair.

They can comply with a new, improved CO or simply agree (in writing) via e-mail to a new fee--or find somebody else who will accept the loss.

In most cases, they really have no idea of package size or even that it's a piggyback and usually are willing to increase the fee. If not, they can start shopping.

If you don't value your time and experience, nobody else will.

Page count is just one of the many "surprises" that can be "dumped" on the notary.

One borrower here, the other there - eg: 2 locations.
Massive faxing.
Location is in high security (takes time to get in) eg: The UN
Apartment is 5 floor "walk up".
Borrower has no valid ID
Language issues
Location is a Hospital with restricted visiting hours
Docs arrive 10 minutes prior to scheduled time
Wrong phone numbers / wrong address
and the list goes on and on

It's not possible to ask ALL the questions - most likely the person you are speaking to does NOT have the answers.

If the required work is "out of standard" (the moment you learn the facts) call for fee increase, and have it emailed to you - both the amount and the reason. If they are unreasonable "dump" the job.
VERIFY everything with the borrower
INSIST on speaking directly to ALL persons who you should notarize - prior to leaving for the job or prior to printing the docs (better).

Don't have "an attitude", often "they" did not know the facts - calmly but firmly renegotiate your fee to match the workload.

Notaries naively accept jobs, because they are desperate. Most notaries do not cover themselves with contracts or terms stated in advance. The only way to protect yourself from really long signings is to quote a rate for signings that are 30-120 pages.

If you don't ask how many pages are in the signing, then you won't be told. If the number of pages is quoted to you to be 90 pages more or less -- then you can tell them that there is a $30 extra fee for signings above 120 pages. If they agree to it, and then you go out and do the signing, then the moral burden is on them.

If you bill them extra and the company doesn't pay the extra fee, then you don't work for them again. If they signed a contract and won't pay the contracted fees, then you can take them to small claim's court.

If you don't state your terms ahead of time, then it is YOUR fault if you get hoodwinked. Whether you can collect or not is a separate issue!
