Jeremy has a GREAT "canned speech" but somewhat long and will scare off customers. I ask about who is signing, generally the caller so I know the language is OK. Then I ask the nature of the document and how many signatures are to be notarized. Lastly I check into the ID of the person signing. Of course hospitals require awareness to the oath and document. With "up front PayPal" I never had a refuse to pay. On the other hand with careful checking that the job will go smoothly, I very rarely (perhaps two or three times) in the past decade had a unable to proceed; usually at hospital where drugs kicked in. The REAL value of prepay is that clients stop "shopping around" - the deal is done.
I really don't use a full canned speech. I just ask a few questions as mentioned above. To me a canned speech sounds "stand offish" similar to a phone answering machine. Each call is different - but if you find out the key items: who, what, when, where, and ID type - most times that is adequate. Hospitals, prisons, "other than the caller is signing" leads to more "gentle" questions.
It takes longer to "interview" the caller; but the "canned speech" is probably ignored - as it MOSTLY does not pertain to their situation.
PayPal in advance, and a few questions works for me.

Well, so far I have never had any instances of non payment. I do ask many questions however prior to me going to the customer-assignment. I need to know things like how many signers, Do they have current ID. If not then I asses whether I can use credible witnesses or not. Using credible witness in California is only doable if I feel that the person CANNOT obtain identification and whose ID may be long expired. Such as in the case of a disabled person confined to hospital or confined to home. I do also want to know if they are going to be medicated, can they hold a pen, if not then a signature by mark would be then a necessity and the witnesses would need to be present. After I get the required information on the phone I am usually confident I wont have any issues. And so far I havent had any payment issue, i guess I have just been very fortunate. I too would be interested in any stories out there....or your canned speeches if you have any.

As notaries working for the public doing non-loan signing work to supplement our mobile notary income, you should get your travel fee in cash at the door just in case they ask you to do something illegal after you have driven all the way out there. You might be asked to notarize a hospitalized grandmother who is high on valium, or asked to notarize a signature using a different name than is on the ID, and your travel fee will not be paid if you don't notarize the documents as you have been instructed to... OMG!!! This is common - beware!!!
So, a canned speech should be part of every phone conversation with a client. Keep it in your wallet.
Here is my canned speech: I will provide notary services to you based on what is permissable by California notary law. My travel fee must be paid when I walk in the door BEFORE I am informed of who the signers are and what the document is.
If the signer doesn't have proper identification, I can not notarize their signature without the use of two credible witnesses who have acceptable identification who can identify the signer. If the document has blanks or is incomplete, I can not provide notary services for you. If the document looks false or fraudulent to me, then I can not notarize for you. If the signer is drugged or doesn't understand the document, I can not notarize for you. If the signer doesn't speak English, or another language that I speak -- to ensure direct communication, then I can not notarize their signature. If the signer can not appear directly before me, then I can not notarize for them -- such a case might happen in a jail if they are 20 feet away and can not move closer.
I want to hear YOUR version of a good canned speech. I bet Ken will write the best one! |
