The key points here, that many inexperienced notaries don't understand are that you need to identify not only the signer, but the document, so it doesn't get confused with other documents. Name and DATE of the document is very important. Many documents have a document date embedded into the text which might be different from the signing date.

Notary Journal thumbprints really help if there is a court case of investigation. It is proof that the Chinese fake-ID manufacturers haven't figure out how to fake (yet).

Right, exactly Jeremy. And really the only time the authorities are going to want to look at your journal in the first place is if you were doing something you weren't suppose to, so if you keep on the straight and narrow and probably won't ever be an issue.

That said, I could do a better job keeping my entries. Not that I leave out important information, it's just that I jot down the information very quickly and my hand writing isn't the best.

Honestly, I don't think anyone (authorities) cares about your journal unless there is fraud or some serious omission there. Small details are not a big deal -- although I kept my journal entries perfect every time! And I included thumbprints 80% of the time to keep me out of trouble.

Depends on the mistake really. How my journal is set up I can check boxes for ID and Doc Type. If I accidently check the wrong one, I black it out and check the right one, circling it afterwards. If I make a typo I cross it out. My journal also has a notes section so I make sure to provide any explanations regarding errors there.

If you make a mistake in your journal, how do you handle this situation? Do you cross out and fix it, or start an entire new entry? The answer might depend on if the signer has signed the journal yet, and if they are still around.
