Discuss proper ID being needed. Ascertain it's available.

Discuss fee during first contact - not when you arrive.
Emboss every notarization.
Post your picture on your web, so they know it's you at the door.
Arrive with extra notary forms.
Respond quickly to email inquiries via your cell phone.
If prospective client says cant afford fee, inform of lower priced alternative, eg: notarization free at some county clerks.
Leave a business card - and a receipt.
Be polite when asked "Do you charge for your services?"
If your quote is high due to distance - inform client of 123notary.com and explain how, using "search by zip code" to find a notary who can work at a lower rate by having to travel a shorter distance.
Double check everything.
Initial the change to the Venue when changing State / County.
Conduct business by the Golden Rule - "Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you".

As to dressing, hair, and odor.... I have done jobs dressed in very shabby clothing, hair ghastly and I am reeking of sweat. Not often, but when I am working on my motorcycle, or some other outdoor project on a hot day. I tell the prospective client my "current state", and ask if they prefer me "as is" and arriving very quickly - or should I take the time to "get cleaned up". In almost every case they prefer speed over appearance - and we end up sharing a laugh about how positively raunchy I (quickly) arrived. They appreciate me giving them the choice.

I am writing a blog entry called, "Going the extra mile". It is about what notaries can do right, so that clients will appreciate them to the point of writing glowing reviews. Average notaries don't get many reviews. It is the really good ones, and the disasterous ones who monopolize on reviews.

But, lets make a list of all the things a notary could do right, to make their client have a wonderful experience they will fondly cherish for years to come!

Dressing well
Hair combed nicely
Smelling good
Nice and refined manners
Showing up a few minutes early
Giving a confirmation call

Any other ideas? I had a fortune cookie idea, but I'm not sure how that would work in the real world. Let's share your ideas here.
