You also have to be careful who you work for. If you work directly for the main company, there is usually not a problem. If you work for someone who is contracted with the company, when they get done with you, you can't get paid. He has been paid by the company, but he is not paying you. I am owed over $600 right now. He paid me just fine until he lost some contracts and decided to cut costs. So now I am out over $600. Very poor way to conduct business. |

2nd best senario, I actually make contact with the debtor but they don't want to give any information so I get paid $30 to drive a few miles in town just to hand some person a letter and take a few pictures.
I'm literally getting paid $30 to be a glorified mail man for a single letter.

Worst senario, a punch in the nose or getting to know Mr. Shotgun.

I preform Debt Chases with a specific company. They pay $30 for a 24 hour turn around. All I usually have to do is deliver a letter politely requesting a debtor to contact their bank regarding the miss payment, ask if they are wlling to make the call in my presence, and then ask if I can record their home/cell/work numbers for the bank. I have to take 3-4 pictures (closest street sign, picture of the house, picture of the house number, and if no ones home a picture of the letter usually taped to their door).

I take these because they give you a 3 day window at your convenience to fulfill their request. I find them slow to pay - 6 weeks on average and they give me $35.00. I've had a few whacked ones at people's homes who obviously shouldn't be granted a business credit. Sometimes the work can be uncomfortable. Still, I like to take them when it's slow. It adds up to extra bucks over time.
Sincerely yours,

I've had two types of inspections. One asked me to visit the business and take photos inside & out & complete a report then scan report & send it & photos to them. They paid fairly well.
Then I had one that wanted pictures & report for $30 - sorry Charlie not me.
I also had one that asked me to take pictures and then talk to the person because they had not been able to contact them. Hmmm sounds like a process server without a notice and could be dangerous if customer got mad.
You have to really ask a lot of questions and make them be specific about what they want. Some will make you put a # or name on each photo, fill out forms, get signatures, etc. That takes a lot of time, but you have to judge if it's worth the money to you.

Good part: they are not in a hurry.
Bad part: they offer $30.
I always ask if I would be required to sign something - if the answer is yes, I decline as my E&O surely will not cover it. Had a few dozen calls of this type over the past 10 years; have not done a single one.

Google "Field Inspections" and also check out the web site for Society of Field Inspectors (sofi.us/home.html). The Sofi web site gives explanations of jobs in the inspection field.

Property appraisal is a bigger deal than inspections. I think that requires more training and certification. Is there any kind of real estate task that doesn't require much training that I can use to supplement my notary income? |

That sounds like an appraisal of the property, not an inspection, especially if it was related to the loan closing you were doing. |

I've gone to signings where the borrower mentions a person who comes into the house, takes a few photos, and leaves. What kind of inspector is this, because it sure doesn't sound like the ones who go through years of training to do it. Occupancy inspection, maybe? It sounds like a pretty sweet gig, so I'd like to know how to get in on it. I work around the Jefferson County, Kentucky area. |
